hi guys

i am a student attending university of toronto (3rd year). I had heard about this site and today finally i had a chance to check it out, and i was just blown by the amount of people you guys have that take part in discussion and so on.

I am actually making a documentary film through the National Film Board of canada. An application has already filled with the NFB and is set to be approved soon time...hopefully!

Alot of the short-films made recently have focused upon south-asian people and how they have struggled to find a good life in this country once immigrated. It focuses on how they drive a cab here and other "well-known" things.

I am however trying to look at a new trend thats growing fast. Im am certainly proud of being a canadian but also take a lot of pride in my south-asian decent. I want to make a film on people who have left excellent lives in south-asia and have migrated to canada. however instead of falling flat on knees here (doing odd jobs) they made the decision to go back to india and re-take the life they left prior to immigrating.

I want to highlight the changing trend of how southasian people have finally started to accept the fact that its not if you live in canada, us or in a western country rather is about how WELL you live your life no matter where.

Im looking for those type of people-came to canada went back to india- and hopefully this website will be THE END to my search.

do you know someone in that state?

your suggestions/comments are also welcomed and NEEDED.
contact me at b.thakkar@utoronto.ca

Thanks.

I think you are looking for failure stories and not on success stories. People who came to Canada and could not succeed and returned to their own profession in India. It is better if you look somewhere else for such stories. This website is to help people in Immigration and settlement. By raising such issues do not demoralise people.

Thanks in advance.

It feels nice to see that you are proud of your South Asian descent and are on your way to show the world a glimpse of life of new immigrants to Canada, through your movie.

You rightly said, that life is about how "Well" one lives ones life, rather than where one lives. I agree with you and firmly believe that it is all in the state of mind.

There can be many people who have gone back to their countries of origin via reverse migration. But then there are hundreds who have succeeded in their dreams, are doing very well and feel proud of making Canada their home.

So if you are making a movie, in my opinion, show a true picture, rather than painting only a negative picture of Canadian life. In my professions, I meet new immigrants almost every day. I have seen them grow and prosper with time. People who adapt, succeed and the less fortunate ones, some who do not want to change, go back.

If you want to interview some SUCCESSFUL people, let me know, I might be able to help you.

hi guys i really appreciate your input/comments.

by no way am i trying to portray such people who have returned to India as "a failure story". I personally don't see it that way, and in my mind living in west doesn't necessarily mean you have achieved success. and also being born n raised up in Canada no way will i be looking to portray Canada negatively. I am looking into how the conception "an immigrant" has evolved. Before it was so difficult for a person to go back to his country and would be "forced" to face and live a life that he so hated, it could be peer-pressure, you know thing like "the whole world lives in Canada and you had to come back" etc from back home or whatever.

I had a chance to visit India, 3rd time in my life and 2nd time in my mature life last summer and talking to people i realized compared to 1999, year i went before last year, now people are finding happiness in India. when i went in 1999 it seemed that the whole country wanted to immigrate, no matter how rich or poor. However, last year what i found was that people who do have good life in India no longer want to leave it behind.

I just want to show how india has changed in the 21st century and many Indians are proud to live in such great nation and no longer seek the escape to the west.

thanks again for your comments and suggestion, its greatly appreciated.

Hey,

Its a nice perspective that you have chosen. I'm not sure how it fits into the NFB mandate though. If its 'reel-diversity' you have applied for then they mostly prefer it to be shot locally. If its some of the other streams, theres more of a chance...though they still like the docs to be canada-centric in most cases. However, it all depends on your proposal and vision and I'm sure you have put thought behind the same. If the NFB proposal does not work out maybe even take your idea to OMNI for their doc fund.

I also produce/direct/edit myself so we can team up together if it makes any sense. P.M me if you want to get in touch

I think Rajand and one more active member from this forum have gone back to India. Use the search option to zoom in on them.
