Okay, so I had it all figured out, what college to apply to, how to get my PR, the whole nine yards, but then something called the "education counsellor" happened. I went to one of those dreadful people and he told me that I shouldn't be going to Alberta or Manitoba ( my earlier choices for studying were Northern Alberta Institute in Edmonton and Red River College in Winnipeg) cause there aren't any jobs there, I should instead think about going to Ontario ( I was trying to avoid Ontario). I told him I have decided on AB and MB cause the cost of living is low, and they have a provincial nominee programmes under which I can get my PR a whole lot quicker then under the skilled worker programme. But then he gave me the bomb of all responses, he said I should go to Ontario, he has students there who have gotten their PR application processed in less then 18 months, I argued that it takes more then 30 months minimum and he said that there are lawyers that get it processed in less then 18 months and they don't charge anything of it's not processed within that time frame. Is this for real? And is it really possible that a skilled worker PR application is processed in less then 18 months? I have shortlisted ONE college amongst the hundreds he gave me, Algonquin College in Ottawa, the course is co-op and it's really good. By the way, I'm looking at studying new media design (graphic + web) or maybe hardcore web design.
Anyway, any help regrding this is appreciated. Sorry about the long post, I talk too much :|

How about reading what the newspapers are saying? Incidentally, the post for which I have provided the link appeared right below yours.

Here are some contacts that may help you with your research:

Professional Associations and unions...
Advertising Association of Winnipeg, 280 Vernon Road, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 2V9, http://www.aaw.org/
Society of Graphic Designers of Canada, Manitoba Chapter, P.O. Box 27018, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3Z0, http://www.gdc.net
Manitoba Sign Association, 211 Sheppard Street, Winnipeg, MB, R2X 3A1.

or

A good counsellor should not try to push you into a decision. A good counsellor is client centred, one who takes the wishes and needs of the clients into consideration. No, it is not true that there are "no jobs there".

@ Blue lobster- Sorry, I didn't look at that post before posting, but my question wasn't about the availability of jobs, the question was of it's possible to get a skilled worker PR application processed in less than 20 months? The counsellor told me that it is possible and I had to give him the benefit of doubt since he had first hand information as oppose to my knowledge which was sourced from the internet. I had little to argue with! I did check the CIC website for processing times and 20% or so cases are processed in less than 20 months. Majority of cases take more then 40 months (Buffalo office)

@ Morning Rain- Thanks a lot for those links! Lol, it's ironic that the report says jobs are moving out of Ontario but if you search for graphic/web design jobs on workopolis and MOST of the jobs are based in Ontario. I agree, a good counsellor should have considered my needs before shoving his opinions down my throat and dimissing anything I say! But no one said he is a good counsellor :D

blink_guy,

what you see advertised on newspapers, internet etc are about 20% of what jobs are actually out there. The "hidden job market" is generally the other 80% of jobs. Networking, developing professional contacts and often cold calling generates many job leads that you will not find advertised.

Another way of looking at it is, if a job is advertised, many many people will apply for that one job. If you make a cold call to a company, it is possible that no one else knows about the job..and you may be the only applicant.

Yeah I agree. A lot of the jobs are not even advertised, you just get them through networking. But it still hasn't answered my question, is it possible to get a Skiller Worker PR application processed in 18-19 months?

Hi Pls note it has taken us a whole 3 yrs to get our immigration in ONtario, even my hubby completed his diplomas overhere. Cost of living is high in ontario comparing to other provinces. So good luck and think twice.
