http://www.gujaratsamachar.com/gsa/20061106/guj/busi/kabhi.html
Some bacground of the story.
Man Mr. Modi said in his letter sent to one of wellknown columnist Mr. Devendra Patel of gujarat samachar and Mr. patel just print in News paper.
Mr. Modi said the he has work in last two year is more then he had work in past 40 year in india.
His daughter is meeried to one canadain Boy at age of 19. Couple was happily living in canada in starting year, Mr. Modi gets the visa (they did not specify which visa visitor or PR) and come to Canada in 2001 that time his son in law has good job. But Mr. modi did not get work so they come back to india. ( may be he was borred without any friend ). After when he came back to india in canada his son in law lose the job. so he came back to canada to healp to his son in law. Now he had star the job in the some indian 's factory at $6 ( soi think he was on visitor visa) in mean time they see the advertise for Gas station so he put his money and also his son in law put their so all they buy one gas station . whole family is working in their own gas station.
this is the first paragraph of the story.
Mr. modi write about his experience, he write the all good and bad things of canada instead of blaming the only bad things.
LAST line of letter???
who have no money and no job in indian can they will come to canada???(This line is the conclusion of the letter)

Is there a English translation for this article ?, if not can somebody give the gist of the article.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
The literal meaning of the title of the article is:
The dreams as shown in India became Fall
Well the article reflects a fail desi's sick mind, written in pure negativism.
The author is 55+ year old gentleman, who was sponsored by his daughter. He immigrated at the age of 55 and obviously for one to settle at this age in a new country is difficult. After doing labor job at the rate of $6 (as per him, I don't know anywhere that salary is being offered), he used all his savings to buy a gas station in Waterloo Canada. It looks like he chose a wrong business for him and he is not satisfied with the return he is getting from the business, the amount of money he is earning, and the amount of time he need to put in the business.
The highlights of his criticism about Canada are:
* For Seven days work in the open sky (Full service Gas station?)
* Had to pay all income in salary
* No body can get rich in Canada
* If both the member of a household earn they can get maximum 4K to 5K. Out of this 1K in rent and the rest goes in Auto, City Tax, Utilities, food etc. Nothing can be saved
* Everyone is living on installments
He is making comments in general about Canadian people:
* Car is cheap but Insurance is expensive
* Food is cheap but the time to cook is expensive
* People spend money on Lottery (He should be happy with as he can get more commission on it!)
* Everybody has a bulky wallet - however it is full of cards - it is difficult to find a dollar! - People living with plastics are having plastic heart and plastic smile
* You pay 30% in income tax, and 15% in sales tax - so you have to pay 45% in taxes
* For each child government gives 200$, so that people start having children. After 18 years they get separated from their parents
* Never heard that Canadian NRI has given donation in India (Anyone to Challenge this statement?)
* Everybody has dogs (pets) - life without that is not complete
* People do smoke a lot here - all members of family smoke together (Thank god, he has not seen people drinking)
* Only 1 percent people are having Good job
* There are people who fill only 2$ gas but can buy Cigarette worth $8 (true!)
He concludes this way:
My dreams became Fall. Here, In Canada, I don't know how long I can sail the boat in the Sand. In India I used to earn little, but was very happy. The happiness we have with Rupees is not there with the Dollars. India is a nice country and India needs more educated people than Canada.
Gujarat Samachar should have put up balanced stories. I think we should respond to the news paper. Let them have another side of the coin.

GG,
Thanks for the interpretation and for your time.
I feel that it represents a True situation of some people here. Being 55, He was fool to buy a gas station and think that he can run it as easily as he does in India. Having just a Gas stn. and that too in Waterloo might not have given him good returns and esp. true if it was located in a god forsaken area.
I also donot agree that only 1% hold good jobs (maybe only 1% were only very happy in their jobs).
His Analysis (eg. Plastic cards, Pets as dogs, Children leaving after 18 years) and all is 100% true.
I donot think that this will negetively impact any Desi thinking of immigrating here. OTOH, It will increase immigration as Desi's will think that this kind of storey is wantedly told by Desi's to prevent competition.

Sidenote : In many cases there are people being offered $4 to $6 cash for jobs. However it is mostly for people working illegally and not for PR's. However some old men may agree to sums like these if it is easy work (like filling just gas only in full serve stations, acting as receptionists/ front office boys, washers in kitchen with food free etc...)

I wonder how many people in India have become millionaires running a small business enterprise? I run a Gas Station too, in Canada. Its hard work... but you do not expect to earn idling around and minting money in a small business enterprise. You have to put in the due effort and it pays. People have made big money by operating Gas Stations in India...but everyone knows how things operate there. There, we have to find out before a fill as to which Petrol Pump gives clean fuel and correct measure. We then go there. Lesser the said the better it is. If we work here on the same idea then the same is not the case here. Work ethics and customer service take a principal place here. There are no shortcuts. Maybe, its tiring for some. But realistically, you cannot become a wealthy guy by operating a small business enterprise like a gas station or a convenience store or a dollar store or a franchise. Then its asking too much and sheer day dreaming. I do not think any other country would be offering such a prospect for small businesses. Yes, like GG suggested, a sending a rejoinder to this article to Gujarat Samachar is a good idea!
