Cd's. This has been my personal observation in Canada. It need not reflect the happenings of the entire community and i am posting this only for the benifit of Desi public.
Let me illustrate my point with an example. A wife of an chinese individual in my office was a Diploma electrical engineer by profession. In 3 months or so, she knew that it was very difficult to get a job in her line in Canada. So she took OSAP loan and studied Supply chain Management/ Logistics course for one year. At the end of her course, she got a job for 48K.
Another example, is another wife of a Chinese Individual. She was BE civil and could not get a job. She took up Masters in env. engg. at U of T , completing which she got a 60K job.
My observations are as follows.: The Chinese always throw a small fish to catch a larger fish. They come to Canada to succeed. If thay have no money, then they sell their houses/ land in China and use that money to do a course which would help them to get employed. They also take courses which are easy to do/ understand and which has a great job potential.
We CD's should learn from this. However I am not willing to post as to what i see as Desi weakness which may evoke a harsh response from CD's/ Mods.
I call upon senior desi's to add valid / constructive points to my topic to help fellow new comer CD's.

I agree with you. I think the key is to forgot the past (Your previous education) and start with a fresh set of eyes.
I have'nt seen much chinese complaining about their qualifications not being recognized etc and most of them have a canadian degree.
Again my personal observation.

One of the things I've noticed, is the excellent networking in the Oriental community. Besides getting jobs thru their strong network, I've seem them promoting the small businesses / self-employed individuals within their community, by using the services.

Is the small business part not true for almost every community? Most immigrants tap into their own communities and end up forming a community based network, I would think.
About the jobs part...I do not know enough Chinese people to comment...you may be right.

From my experience and hearing from others, people say that Chinese recommend Chinese to the place that they were prior to seeking employment in another company. IOW (in other words) a chinese moves out and a chinese comes in his place. I have also seen that between Chinese there is very little politics and this mentality helps them in better netwoking.
I have also seen some very lazy Chinese people in my office and elsewhere but they seems to be getting better job die to their network and sharp business mind. They cook in a very short time and thus get more time to network/ socialize/ study etc ... Many Chinese know the deals in this land and they also know how to get things done even though they have english limitation (e.g, License, Driver's certificate, Low Insurance through Meloche Monex due to Wine certificate etc...).
One personal example, are 2 chinese males who were working in our office for 1 and 2 years resp. for $12 an hour. They did not know english (not needed in Architecture) nor were they able to understandour commands in English. Just when i was thinking that our office will be the last ever office to employ them in Canada (due to non technical ability) both of them moved to better jobs at $20 an hour.
A family member of mine who was working in a Chinese CEO office, told me that while filling a vacancy, the CEO always recommended Chinese people's resumes to the HR/ Technical people for filling up the vacancy (the HR/Tech. hired more competant people from other countries is a diff. story). This proves that they prefer people of their own community to come up.
Though i know that the Chinese people have good business sense, My experience about them in that sector is nil and so i am not commenting.

TK ... This spirirt of helping is there in Indian community also, though I must add that in some cases it is limited to individual communities . Like in Dubai the networking amongst Malyalee's is phenomenal. I was working in a company involved in construction & of the 800 odd people employed there 90% were from Kerala. Also in Africa you will see a lot of Sindhis, again the networking is great & they help each other in setting up bussineses. Here also, in Canada, you will see the networking in the Punjabis, I know quite a few who have bascially come here through their network only.
