I've heard they have their own yellow pages websites in Chinese.

Can you see the great wall from where you are?

Just kidding :)

I've heard of the yellow pages too. There IS definitely the impression that the Chinese community is organised. I've never had a chance to look into it.

If yellowpages is any indication, Indians in GTA have plenty of them too. Desiconnection.ca, Eastwest Directory, Punjabi Lehren Buyer's Guide, etc. It is searchable by category. Canadiandesi classifieds and business section too have plenty of businesses listed.

Doing a course in Canada and getting employed would be definitely better than working as general labour for $8 an hour.

True, most of our friends here have been better off after getting some Canadian education. One of them is now teaching in an university here. I could have sworn that these friends are desi(and housewifes before), from U.P/WB/AP etc. What do I know, they are probably chinese. :). I think I am Chinese too...I took an osap loan and quit a full-time/permanent office job (and a raise) when there was no other source of income and a bank balance of 500$.

Jokes apart maybe we can make this thread more meaningful by focussing on the education aspect instead of the Chinese aspect?

Hi Jake,
Let me take it up from here. Could you please explain (if it is OK) more about osap loans? Like who can get it, eligibility, eligible courses and age limit (if any). I was thinking of supplementing my PhD (from India) with some Canadian diploma/training etc. I know there is a website for it. But wanted your perspective on it.
Thanks in advance

Hi Ranin,
This was 8-9 yrs ago so I'm not sure if the criteria has changed. I'll tell you what I know.
OSAP loans are available to citizens and landed immigrants. In the latter case one has to be a resident of Ontario for atleast one year.

Again my memory on the course of events is a bit fudgy but I got admission(full-time) to the program and applied for the loan( online now) and took the papers to the bank. From what I understood then the govt basically stands as a guarantor in the process and the banks lend you the $. I'm not sure about the interest rates but If I remember correctly they were quite reasonable. The time period for paying back the loan was 15 yrs. the interest portion can be claimed at tax time. I had to start paying the loan back 3-6 months after the end of the program.

From my prespective, it worked out well for me. I was able to easily pay off the loan in 3 yrs time. In my case it was one of the best investments I've ever made in my lifetime.

Here is the site

http://osap.gov.on.ca/eng/not_secure/contents.htm

I dont know how much things have changed so if a recent OSAP beneficiary can chime in...it'll probably help the newcomers.
