I had the opportunity of participating on a desi radio program yesterday, where the topic was on informing Women of Desi origin on the rights/freedom in Canada.
It was heart wrenching to hear the accounts of many a DesiLladies who participated in this program on the kind of abuse they are encountering in Canada. One common thread which emerged on the Desi ladies who spoke on this show, was that they all immigrated to Canada with Dollar Signs on their eyes, and when they landed in Canada they also need to take up employment to make ends meet. They need to work on the job, work at home to take care of kids and more than that they need to encounter physical and verbal abuse from their husbands. Many a times they find that their passports are with their husbands and they do not know the system here and hence lead a prisoner type life here. This is not confined to the labor class but is prevalent with educated people like Engineers, Software professionals and other professionals.
This is very high in a particular area/group in GTA. Some of the Desi men want their wives to change in terms of employment and earn money but want their better halves to remain the same way from where they came from in terms of rights and freedom.
If there are any Legal experts/Para legals who practise the family law in this forum, would kindly share your expertise through writeups/ Q&A session on the rights of women in Canada. They could also write about the methods to approach for protection under law and other charity/safety groups if they need to walk out of their home.
It was shocking to hear a male caller who said I do not mind to cut somebody's throat and my throat too, if I have to undergo further humiliation as had been arrested and kept in a prison cell overnite as his wife called the police on him for his physical abuse.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
Nothing surprising. Visit http://www.path2usa.com" rel="nofollow">LINK and under discussion forums and experiences section, you will find tons of stories from H4 (dependent wives) about their horrors with their beloved IT $$$ (USD) earning "educated" husbands.
Obviously, the mentality does not change for these people wherever they live.
Fortunately, for women living in Canada, in most cases, they are either PRs or citizens and are independent (from immigration stand point), although, they might be economically and psychologically dependant.
In the US, the H4s are at total mercy of their husbands for everything as they lose their status if things get messed up and they can't work either.

what do you expect when on this forum itself a subservient mentality(especially for women and girls) is equated with 'cultural values' and a positive attribute?

This was a hotly discussed topic in Vancouver/lower mainland a few weeks back, taking the front page for a few days in local newspapers, with 3 homicides in a week, following which there was was a forum in Surrey for which thousands of women turned up, speaking about the abuses they faced over the years. Their pictures and interviews were splashed all over the press. Made us South Asian men look bad.

But like SK & Dimple mentioned, this seems prevalent even among educated people, and in the US too. I knew someone who is now in jail for brutally beating up his wife.
Indian men make the best husbands!?!
