For reviews check out http://www.cnet.com" rel="nofollow">LINK

Just don't go in for those $60-70 ones from Walmart or Crappy Tire, the Curtis or Durabrand makes and the like. They are really crappy.

It is a very open ended question. The cost of home theatre system ranges from a few hundred dollars to a hundred thousand dollars.

The biggest mistake we do is buying a system which sounds very well at the shop and finding that it sucks at your home. You need to understand the room type, size, the wall and floor texture and type. The best way is to go to any of the top end home theatre experts who will visit your home make audio measurements by bouncing sound of your wall, roof and floor. They will also study the room dimensions/windows/doors in the room. They will identify the right type of speakers, their number for that room along with the placements of them so that noise cancellation or absorption of sound by the wall, carpets does not occur. Then you can move down to the amplifier/surround sound processor and study whether you want plain Dolby or you want THX with how many channels you want which could be 6, 7 or 8. The next would be your DVD player whether you want one with DIVX and various add ons on it or not. Lastly it boils down to your monitor. Whether you want a roof mounted projector or want a 60 inch Plasma or a 42 inch LCD TV.

The best place to start off is to study the Bose Acoustimass Speaker Systems. They range any place from few hundred dollars to a couple of thousands. They are best for entry level and are also small and easy to carry when you move out.The website is www.bose.ca for your information.

The best way to do a good home theatre system is to convert your basement into a home theatre, by installing theatre like seats or good recliners from Lazyboy and having a large screen and projecting the movie through a over head projection system. You can have your popcorn/pop and have a good movie going experience. If you want to know how it could look like then you can watch the show \"Sopranos\" and you will often the see the family watching a movie in their \"Home Theatre\".

If you plan to watch just Desi movies which again are copied or pirated the sound quality sucks. There is no point in investing a good Harmon-Kadon or any other good brand and find that the sound quality sucks.

By the way as a true desi would you like to convert your basement into a home theatre or convert it into a 2 bed room basement and rent it and earn $800 per month. The real problem is that as technology advances what you buy today as top of the line is obsolete even before you leave the store. Look at the DVD player they are talking about Blue Ray DVD's or the price of LCD's/Plasmas crashing. Now a days you can plug in your Ipod or your MP 3 player to your TV and play a decent movie.

Incidentally I have an Yamaha Home Theatre package bought in October 2003 which I would like to dispose off at a fractional cost of what I bought. Any takers ?.

Thanks Sudesh and Shankaracharya. My budget for Home theater system is around $ 3000.00 + an DLP projector. Honestly, I dont want to get professional help in deciding the type of system I need, rather I would like to invest that money in the system itself. Any other suggestions?

Loan me the money !. I'll pay you prime plus 2. With BSE set to reach 15,000 in the next 3 months I know a few stocks where I can double your 3K.

Just Kidding!.

I would build my system piece by piece a that budget. I'll not go to Best Buy or Futureshop as they have generic systems.I suggest you check out Bay Bloor Radio which is a high end shop in Toronto.

In regards to the DLP projector I'll worry about the bulb replacement cost and it life time.

Good luck on your adventure.

Here's a forum I find useful:

Looks like you want high end stuff....which you won't get in FS or BB.

Check out Paradigm speakers - Canadian made and bought by enthusiasts. They have several price ranges. I've read a lot of great reviews about their speakers.

Shankaracharya,

Your knowledge about the sound and music system seems great. Tell me, if the above sound consultant's professional advise is included in the system or is it extra? If extra then how much approx.?

What in your opinion can be a good THX 5/7 channel amplifier and speaker system ? I am thinking of installing it in my finished basement approx. 400 sq ft in size (30'X13'), plain gypsum ceiling and laminated flooring.

Budget for amp+speakers only- $1200-$2000

Regards,
