Well the way the population of Canada is spread out is a pretty clear indication why you hear about Toronto very often.
Majority of Canada's population (around 30 million when I last checked), live around the perimeter of Lake Ontario, or in South Western Ontario. and Vancouver. To sum it up, the population is in and around the cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. The rest of Canada is pretty much empty.
Most people choose to settle in Toronto for various reasons. The #1 reason I've noticed is, they don't necessarily settle in Toronto because of job oppurtunities, but more so because they have relatives/families or friends in Toronto. So it's pretty much a decision based on "going where you know people."
However, I would say this is actually the worst way of looking at it, because there are so many oppurtunities available beyond the major cities. Canada is trying very hard to disperse the populations away from the major centres, more into the other regional provinces. It depends on what you're looking for. If you're primarily interested in making money only here, then you might actually be better off staying away from the major centres and go where the demand is -- even if it's in a remote city. But if you're looking for lifestyle, leisure then you might be better off staying within the vicinity of the main centres.
If you're a professional/educated person. toronto is supersaturated with educated professionals, and competition in Toronto is very high.
If you're looking for an average job, or labour work then you can find that pretty much anywhere.
