Hi Guys,

I just would like to share some information I heard and would like to know how to deal in such a situation.

I heard that someone who was going to a family doctor had a simple cold, fever and headache, and his doctor asked him to scan his head for the suspecting cancer. This guy refused to go for a scanning, and is quiet normal now.

Later he tried to change the family doctor, and the doctor refused to give a transfer letter, and the new doctor said he could do anything without this first doctors letter. Is this true???????

After quiet a long time, he got a letter from ministry that his life is in danger, and he has to go for scan test within 5 days, otherwise his health card will be cancelled.

I am surprised to hear such a story here in Canada. I just wanna know that someone is pulling a joke on me or is it real story in Canada.

I would say that somebody is making up a story here. There are simply too many holes in the story to discuss.

Hi Raj,

I had my own experience, in poor health care of Canada.
Once it happened to me, something gone in my eyes when staying in the subway station Yonge and Bloor, and it hurts me so badly that I could not open my right eyes, and I had to rush to the emergency in St: Michael’s hospital.

Do you want to hear what happened????
First, I had to wait till one of the nurses take the observation report ~15 minutes

then, they send me to second counter, there they asked me for the health card, even though every thing including my address was written on it, and they could swipe the card to get all information in less than a minute, they very slowly started to ask my address, my postal code, etc etc.... ~15 minutes

Then they asked me to wait in the waiting room ~ 30 minutes.

Then the third Nurse came to take me from the waiting area to another waiting area and asked me to wait over there ~ 3 hours.

I was checking with the nurse when I can see the doctor, on a hope that if in case there is some particle pierced on my eye ball it will be better to take it out. As my eye was watering all the time I was waiting over there. And when ever I asked how long I have to wait to see the doctor, the nurses were giving me a stare, and told me they don’t know.

I have also noticed that there were some 5 nurses in that room having a chat, as they did not have anything to do.

Finally I had to call my doctor in India, as seek for help, he asked me to take a wash in running water, I did that. By that time my wife has reached there, and I came out to the first waiting area, and asked her to take a look in my eyes to see of there is something is there in the black area of my eyes.
My wife did not find anything and we just walked out of emergency thinking that is there is some irritation again I would fly to India.

I understand that there is scarcity of doctors in Canada, but I don’t understand why 7 nurses and 2 security guard have to be there in that hospital if there is only one doctor.

I consider it as a national waste of government money.

Is this what we get in return of the tax money we pay, or is it that we have to beg for the mercy of the nurses and doctors, when they eat and live comfortably on the tax payers’ money. Or is it a feeling the doctors and nurses get that the patients are like beggars who don’t have a choice other than to beg for the mercy of their service here in Canada. Or is that the doctors and Nurses think they are like GOD, and no competition for them or Government is protecting them so well with Tax payer’s money.

I have heard more bad experiences from my friends, over here, and they told me "WELCOME TO CANADA, Ontario is yours to discover".

It does sound like an emergency :D . Did someone have to help you do that? Perhaps the heart surgeon should have taken time of to splash water into your eyes for you.

Get serious man!

What WOULD have been a waste is if your case was bumped up in priority. Looks like the nurses in triage knew what they were doing when they assigned you an obviously lower priority.

Priority is not assigned on the basis of what the patient FEELS should be one. I've waited in emergency with a broken arm for 5 hrs...once for my then 3 yrs old son too. There were other patients who deserved more urgent care.

From reading your post its obvious its not the doctors who think they are GOD.

Government is always pushing the hospitals with tight budget and value for money, etc., so hospitals cannot really afford to have more people than they require.

I had a very recent experience..
call to 911 was answwered very promptly and my daughter who was unconcious for some time taken care of as she had vomitted as well on regaining conciousness...but the good job stopped there.
when we reached the emergency care we went through the procedures and waited for 6 hours only to realise
1. some patients who were known to the nurses were allowed in early
2. The nurse who had taken the history had forgotten the most important part of history ..Loss of conciousness to add to history hence the delay in seeing her
3.The paramedics stayed there for 4 hours watching just in case my daughter needed any help as they obviously could see the seriousness of the situation but the nurses could not.
4. Give tylenolol to patients with high fever and give icelollies to suck ...if only the fever was due to throat infection i was dreading to think..
the list of obscervations is long ..to keep it simple

The goverment is spending a lot on paramedics ambulance etcc and they are doing a good job but the wait time is too long and the management in the emergency is rediculously inadequate at least what is expected from Canadaian standars..
ASFAR AS THE EYE PROBLEM IT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN PROLONGED FOR TOO LONG MEDICAL HISTORY IS LITTERED WITH ANECDOTES WHERE MORE HARM HAS BEEN DONE BY WAITING

BETTER BE SAFE THAN SORRY

It is not for you, the nurses or anyone to decide an emergency. The fact remains that the health system needs a revamp. You cannot hide the shortcomings of the health care under the garb or whether it was an emergency or not. After all we pay for it and must demand immediate attention when we feel the need for it. If one cannot get medical attention when one needs it why should one pay for such a system.

Maybe you should read this story.
http://news.sympatico.msn.ctv.ca/TopStories/ContentPosting.aspx?feedname=CTV-TOPSTORIES_V2&newsitemid=CTVNews%2f20061228%2ffamily_doctor_061228&showbyline=True

Maybe she should have not done so because it was not an emergency. She survived through it! She too is in Quebec, why don't you walk to her and explain in person how good the medical system is and why she does not need to worry.
