We are moving to Toronto this summer from the US and are looking at North York as a potential place to live in. I searched the site but after a few hundred posts, I gave up since I could not find what I was looking for. Please answer my questions when you get a chance.

1) We have a 11 year-old son who's in 6th grade now. Are the public schools in the North York area good? Can you recommend any schools?
2) We have a car but would still like to live near the subway in a city-like setting. Can you recommend some good areas to live in? What's the average rent for a 2-bed apt plus parking? I saw a few sites where the rent ranges from 1000 to 1500 but I wasn't sure how good they were.
3) Are there desi groceries within 5 miles? What about ethnic restaurants?

Thank you in advance for your help.

The neighbourhoods in the North York area close to Fairview Mall are decent, even a few that are a bit north-east from there. There are basement apartments in the area as well (walk in, not underground) which might be suitable to you as well (if that's an option for you...not sure if you like them or not).

Almost anywhere in Toronto you'll be able to get a 'city-like feeling' as it quite busy/active in a lot of areas. A decent 2 Bedroom unit that's all inclusive with a parking spot will cost around $1200-$1300/month.

Hi
Please avoid the Don Mills and Overlea Blvd area (that is close to the Ontario Science Center as in one of the responses), lots of burglary there.
Wherever you head to, please make sure the condo / apt has a 24 hour conceirge/ security.

There are many condos where the rent is reasonable but the cost you pay for the lack of security is high.

All the best

Having lived in that area for 7 years I fully agree. If you need more details or would like to talk to me...PM is the key.

Hi Friends:

Can anyone provide feedback on the various public schools (middle and high) in this area. I can look at the EQAO scores but I am sure that's not the best way to go about it. If your kids attend one of the middle schools in the area, I am really keen to hear what you think.

Thanks

Dear Naresh

North York Stretches from Don Mills/Victoria Park in the East to Jane in the West and from Steeles in the North to Sheppard/York Mills in the South.

Given the vastness of the area and the socioeconomic disparities within, the best approach would be to first narrow down which part of North York (by intersection) you want to stay in. Once you are clear about that, then it would make sense to further drill down on other aspects, such as schools.

If you have zeroed into Sheppard/Don Mills, then you can investigate schools by searching through this link

North York, is not a beautiful place but still it is very convenient and some of the neighbourhoods are very safe. Mostly you will be close to all amenities. Even if you do not live near a subway there are buses that run to and from there every 10-15mins. I live a little north of Steeles and Yonge which is a Jewish community, mostly, but very very safe. Homes are decent, so I think Don Mills/Sheppard, Yonge/Steeles evn a little west or east from there is decent. Richmond Hill is better, it has bigger, better homes and most of them are new constructions. If you live in this vicinity you will have access to the best mall in Canada which is called Vaughan Mills, which has vivid reminiscences to a typical American mall, for once you feel you are not in Canada but south of the border!!

Sheppard and Yonge though is a chic place with new condos most of them luxury. If a single person with good and steady wants to live in luxury he/she can check this place out.

Hope my views help!

Naresh,

Check out the Toronto Sun website as they had a little of all schools in the GTA in their Feb 12 '07 issue, you might find that very helpful. If you want I can keep the clippings for you, I have that at home.

Hope this helps!
