Is it just me who finds the Dispensing Fee that pharmacies in Ontario charge is useless expense ? I see a Pharmacist adding no value in this whole process. I just brough some prescription medicines from Rexall. 6 tablets costed $5 bucks, but added to that is $9.99 of dispensing fee.

All that the pharmacists did, take the big bottle of the medication, read the name, put into a small bottle, ask the computer to print a label and literature on the medication and swipe your credit card !!

So I went Googling to find how the fees varies and looks like Walmart is the best option, if you don't have Costco membership and don't live near one, though in Toronto, you can usually find one.
Never heard of Fortinos Pharmacy.

Retailer Fee $
Costco 4.11
Fortinos Pharmacy 6.54
Guardian Drugs 11.99
Hy & Zels 7.49
Independent Pharmacy 7.49
Loblaws Pharmacy 7.49
Pharma Plus 11.99
Rexall 9.99
Shoppers Drug Mart 11.99
Ultra Food & Drug 7.49
Wal-Mart 7.47
Zehrs Markets Pharmacy 7.49
Zellers Pharmacy 7.49

It is better to spend 9.99 for professional guidance. You think that pharmacist just checks the label and pass it on to you. But s/he has many things to check.
For eg. Side effects, interaction, dosage and many more..

I worked and built software for Insurance industry. The Pharmacist is not checking and neither do they have information on all the medications you are taking to tell you the side effects or drug interactions.

It is the computer which is looking at the database sitting with the insurance company and prompting them of any drug interactions, because if the patient(i.e customer for the insurance company) get's more ill, it costs more money for the insurance company.

No pharmicst in Toronto has ever asked me if I had any questions about the medication. They rather print sheets of paper that the computer spits out and hands it over to you.

So I don't see any justification in paying the dispensing fee.

I agree. When you get a printed paper, it most likely printed from the data stored in the computer and pharmacist has no input in it. I donot see any reason for paying dispensing fee. If it was smaller fee like $ 1 to 2, I would say it could go towards updating and maintaining software but average $ 9 per drug. It is another way of making money. That's why the shares of companies like Shopper Drug Mart go up and up.

Pharmacist is solely responsible for any error which he has dispensed.
If you can pay 10$ to sign one paper to notary why can't you pay to Pharmacist.
Pharmacist has to know the side effects and interaction. Definitely, computer helps but he make sure the thing.
If you haven't got information from pharmacist then you have right to ask to any pharmacist and you will get the answer.
Pharmacists are professionals they dont work blindly.
If it would have that easy then why do they pay 40$ per hour to pharmacist.

Grass is always green from other side. So you think pharmacist is gettin huge money for nothing.

$ 1 FOR DISPENSING FEES...YOU BETTER GO TO CONVINIENCE STORE TO BUY ADVIL RATHER THAN PRESCRIBED DRUG. :D
