Does any one know what the rule says regarding the privacy of tenants in their own apartment? can a super of building enter in the apartment by using their keys even when you are in the apartment?
I understand that if you are out and they really needs to come in they can, but they should let you know before entering.

Our super enters the apartment all the time using his keys by just knocking the door once; even when he knows that I am home these days. To tell you one situation, today I was in the bedroom with my 3 months old girl, cooker was on gas.he enters the apartment(i didn't hear any knocking), switched off the gas, put the cooker on next burner, and then knock the bedroom door letting me know that he is in.(since the cooker was on gas, my daughter was crying and i was talking to someone on phone, i didn't hear any thing till he knocks the door of the room)
Is this acceptable?

This is no way Acceptable.

I dont have direct Answer to it. But can point to couple websites that can help you.

You can Contact Board and ask for Help. These guys are helpful and they direct. I have talked to them couple times when I was Renting.

One of the Help Sections is your concern -
My landlord or their agent has:
* illegally entered my rental unit
* changed the locks without giving me replacement keys
* withheld or interfered with my care services, vital services or food in a care home
* interfered with my reasonable enjoyment of the rental unit
* harassed, coerced or threatened me

Can U put a second lock or a chain from inside and use it when you're at home. I know of some management co's objecting to it.

You should certainly bring this to the notice of the management office. Talk to the Sr. Manager.

Did he give you a reason why he needed to enter that urgently.

yes, he wanted to fix something in washroom, which was not at all urgent.

While he was working, i called my husband and then he called his wife and told her every thing. She did apologize for her husband and ask us to add a chain lock.

Actually the couple is in their late 60s, old, very nice and helpful, supervising this building since 12 years, that’s why he takes every thing lightly.

Hopefully he will keep this in mind now.

thanks.

Nova Scotia Rental Agreement Law clearly states that if the Bldg Supervisor / Management have to enter the Apartment they must have put a notice on the Apartment 24 hous before .... I wonder if its similar in Ontario.

i think in Ontario, they just have to call you before entering.

In Ontario, the rule is similar. I think it says sufficient notice is provided to the occupant which is generally one business day.
