Sorry for posting this in both Independent Category & Family Class Thread, But desperately waiting for any response.


I am living in Vienna, Austria with my husband who is Canadian PR.

I have applied from Vienna for PR under Independent Category in July 2006, at that time, time line was 1 year, but now it has increased to 27 months & we can't wait that long as my husband's contract is going to finish in this june 2007 so we are planning to move back to canada.

Some of my friends have told me that processing under family class is very fast, So I would like to know 2 things as follows:

1) Is it possible for my husband to sponsor me while physically being outside from Canada? & if yes, whats the procedure?.
2)Is there any possibility that application which we have file under Independent category be converted to Family class?.

I will really appreciate your valueable prompt reply.

It looks like no body knows clear answers to your questions. Have you tried cic.gc.ca ?

They might have some information on this regards.

I think if your husband is paying Canadian Taxes he should be able to sponsor you.

Your husband can sponsor you from outsiude, but he has to be in Canada when you are ready to land.

In terms of conversion of independent cateory to family class, I was in a similar situation as my wife had applied under the independent category (from US) before marriage.

A couple of months before marriage, she wrote to CIC saying that she was withdrawing the application under independent category. After marriage, she stayed back in India and I sponsored her under the family class. She got her PR visa within 3 months.

Dear Freakoutguy thanks for your valuable info, could you please tell me that if i withdraw my application now, should i get the fees back or not.
