.
An unrelated aside...did you notice that my spelling of the word is from the Bards english? You are using the American way. Just thought it was interesting because whenever I read it the American way it just 'feels' wrong. For a minute I thought all of you are spelling it wrongly.

But things that make you earn bread , make the society survive and develop , medicine , engineering to name a few are critical for humanity s survival.... so which skills are superior .....?? technical of course .
I have known ppl who have had great artistic ability , but have kept it aside as a hobby in favor of a more rewarding and contributing technical career .
Of course there s no denying the fact that theres a contribution by ppl in Humanities but what Alexm and I are trying to project is that that contribution is minuscule and doesnt make a critical difference to our lives ..... an interesting example would be any form of music which one of the biggest artiste composed v/s smthing technically invented such as emails / internet ............ can there be a debate about which is more beneficial.
Most of the subjects and courses that I have known have the following order of exclusiveness .... if you are a Science guy , you are eligible for Humanities and Commerce .... but if you are a Humanities students , it is assumed by selection criterion that your calliber is not good enough for sciences ..... it may not work for exceptions , but for the majority its a norm and hence a rule.....so which is more important ?
I do not think that this issue is at all debatable as why the OP has come as a surprise is because a technical person has proceeded on with her choice of Humanities ......... raising eyebrows .

If ppl do not know how to use internet , they are either very old or illiterate not to be talked off........ like our average villager ...but then to him also electricity and power makes more sense than Kishore Kr or Mohd Rafi.....
And if someone feels Internet is just a tool ......... instead of saying that it is THE TOOL ...... I am afraid we are on totally different pages and I better not put any more arguments ...........Imagine ... it used to take 20 days for news to travel at one time ..... with the Internet it takes an instant ...... thats technology and its contribution to our everyday life ......
I think comparing the 2 is like comparing the pizza with the topping...... which is more important and basic to needs ....... pizza of course ..topping is an add on and just an option which can never take over the pizza and the need for satisfying hunger.
Bridge and clothes are meant for usage .... their aesthatic appeal is secondary ...... How many ppl know an Armani ..... but evryone uses season specific clothes ........who cares much for an Armani...... even for those who do .... try asking them would you wear an Armani shirt or a normal jacket in winters and its obvious what the reply would be .
Technology doesn't depend on ppl of Humanities but ppl of Humanities depend on Technology .............. an ordinary person also enjoys Internet / mp3 player but ask AR Rehman who much technology brings a difference to his work.
And to the MP3 player remark let me assure you I am an avid music buff and have an mp3 player also ......... but haven't used it for the past 6 months as that is secondary to my settling down in career and do the little primary contribution to society that my job brings ........
Humanities is secondary and can be done without unlike Sciences which are life giving and life supporting .......... We can argue and mis argue but the facts are undebatable.
