Just read this article, and I am sitting here, thinking, what in the world goes in today's teen's mind.

This is both side fault - parents and kids. I think more with parent sides.
If you notice this things happens mostly with poor or lower middle class families (in India too they have lot of kids).

If both parent are working 10 hrs a day (all 7 days) then kids can get side track easily with friends/media ideas and hanging out with own type of friends.

It also depends upon which neighborhood are you living, which school kids are going, what type of friends they are hanging out, how is the interaction between parents and kids.

There are lots of things we can write but here few points in my mind came:

1. Give more time to kids (not only in home work) in all the activities and listen to them till they finish.
2. Take them out to mall, shopping, play areas, matches, hockey, dinner, ice cream.
3. Talk to their friends and invite at home for casual get-together/party once in while.
4. Buy/live in nice neighborhood (does not matter own communities families are there or not) and send them in good school/private schools. (generally good neighborhoods have good schools).
5. Kids should never get too much attracted with their friend’s stuff/gadgets so they start having/staying at their homes for long time. Sometime some kids don’t like own home because they have long list what is missing at their homes (may be own room), no one listen their stories.

That sounds about right. Isolated environments where both parents go to work, and no proper supervision for attention seeking kids, this is what they find satisfaction in. It's high time that parents pay attention to their busy schedules and keep aside some valuable time for their kids.

I think education is the key here. You're less likely to do something that could impact your life in a negative way if you have all the facts and are educated on the risks and dangers of having unprotected sex (lets face it, we are not going to be able to actually stop them from doing the deed) but if you arm them with the facts they are more likely to understand the outcome of their actions...and possibly prevent them from making a mistake.

I think this is an isolated case where a group of girls who are friends have gotten themselves into this situation. I don't think this applies throughout the UK or even all of London. I would imagine most young girls have a mind of their own and would not just get pregnant for 'kicks'
