If Rahul Bajaj wants his sons to work at the shop floor level to learn that after doing their MBA its a different scenario.

But then he would not approve them of doing just that in stead of achieving academic knowledge .

I have already maintained that things like subjective , individual , exceptions are just that ... and are unrelated . They are exceptional and do not form the rule .

I dont think the young lady is doing 'just that'. From what i read she is waitressing only part time. I dont think its in her long term goals to continue on that path.

As you can see most people on this thread do not think its unrelated irrespective what you have 'already maintained'. The fact that this young lady is holding this kind of a job, when she absolutely does not have to, shows that she is strong-willed and motivated. It also shows that she is unlikely to judge people based on the jobs they do. Sounds like a character of high calibre to me. Ofcourse, we already know that we differ on what 'calibre' actually means :D

Fido .... she is doing it part time ... on the weekends ... nothing wrong with that ..... there is as much time you can spend on your studies ...... so rather spending the free time partying she is using her time in something she is comfartable and am sure she has a reason for that .... now she is not here to give her reasons so let it be ..... but the basic question that TK raised was ....1) is it ok for a student to spend time on part time jobs 2) is it ok to be a waiter ..... now on both counts I feel he is wrong .... perhaps it is the perception we carry for certian professions that makes us think like that ..... on the note of waiters .... most of the hollywood stars have been waiters before they hit big time. I guess it is the flexibilty of timing and the fact that you meet different people ... i guess ....

I am a total desi - in dressing and thinking.

However, my children have worked as:

sales associate in clothing companies,
cashier/burger flipper/cleaner etc. in fast food chains
waiter in Pizza hut

and this is after they already have enough money IN THEIR OWN BANK ACCOUNTS to put them through undergraduate degrees atleast!

What I propose to gain from this is their developement of discipline, communication skills, people interaction skill and networking, a closer look at the real world, and most of all, knowledge of business and employees who work at that level which will be good for them whether they get into jobs/carrears of their choice or their own businesses.

For desi children - it is not the case simply because we as parents do fund each and every basic needs/ legit requirements of their lives. Respect for money comes only when you have to use it for your basic needs - if they are met, the extra money earned is for fun and extravagance.

Well I agree with you that desi parents do fund basic needs ( according to the parents ) of their children ...

but I still think that if one has to work to earn it does give some respect for the money as well as the job ...

I am sure even if kids are using it for fun and extravagance ( In parents views ) they definitely have very high value for that extravagance and kids will think how they earned it , so I am sure they will value the money earned by themselves and things they bought or fun they had with their own money ...

Well I know a Person who is getting paid very well more than $100K ( I guess this is the meter to check worth of a person ) and he was VP in a large Telecom company in India and his both the teenage sons used to do so called odd jobs earning a few hundred bucks a month ...
elder one is working to go into DDS already and younger one is around 15 or 16 ...

So I strongly think that money earned by self is valued most ( or maybe it is the parents who have to play some role as well ) ...:)
