Greetings everyone
I'm a newbie to this site as well as I'm newly landed immigrant.Currently I live in Atlanta, USA and I have around 10 years of IT experience in C ++/Java/Unix/Oracle, 7 of which is in USA.I work as a Tech Lead/Tech Manager in medium size company.I have MS ( IS ) from US.
I want to move to Canada (not to commute from Windsor-Detriot, but to live permenantly). I heard lot of negative opinions regarding job market in Canada. What are my chances of getting a job in Canada? What kind of salary can I expect? Please give honest opinions
Thanks
ST
To put in simple words.
1. Market wouldn't be as bad as you think considering your experience, education and background.
2. Pay would be bit depressing. Even by number, if the pay matches, you would be surprised with the buying power.
3. If you look for contracting positions in place of Full time, you might be able to earn and save better.
4. For a Lead position in full time, the pay ranges between 80K to 120K, remove the K that would be the hourly rate ( well, it may really be in between 55 - 75 / hr).
5. Finally, you keep your heart/mind open for some surprises and reserve some "What the ****" type of rants, and locals (esp new Citizens) comments "This is Canada, like it or leave it type", but don't worry you will have a lot of company.
Good luck mate.

The skillset you have is hot anywhere, and here as well. So you should be able to land a job. But search through workpolis.com. Compare it with jobs available on dice for any metro, say Chicago. That will give you an idea of how small the job market in Canada is. As long as you do not have very high expectations you should be fine. You have to come to terms with the fact that your take home pay here will be quite a bit less than in the States.
From what people tell me, the IT job market is on an upswing so jobs are easier to find. So if you're planning to come here, now is a good time I suppose.
How much $$ I can expect before tax? what would that be after tax?
I currently earn around $95 K USD
I think 100K would be a good (very good even) salary in the Toronto area for your background and experience. Here's a tax calculator that shows how much you'd take home:
http://www.ey.com/GLOBAL/content.nsf/Canada/Tax_-_Calculators_-_2005_Personal_Tax
Your take home will actually be a little less than that because there are other deductions, same as you have in the states.
One other thing to keep in mind is that these 100K+ jobs are not readily available. As I said earlier, the job market being small means you have to hunt more to find the job and salary you want. Again, search on workopolis and you'll get an idea of what I mean.
