Hi,

I am planning to go to the US for more than 1 week for vacation. I am thinking of getting a AV receiver and speaker system when I get back to Canada by car.

As far as I know, if I am outside the country for more than 7 days, I will be allowed an exemption upto CAD750 (i.e. no customs duties/taxes for any goods under CAD 750 per person). I am not sure if this applies for electronics goods also. I did not see it in the list of exemptions on the Canada Customs website.

I was wondering if any other CDs had similar experience.

Thanks in advance.
Ash

That's not true. Your exemption limit will be $750 based on your stay, but each item cannot exceed more than $60. Any one particular item more than $60 attracts duty. AFAIK, they don't distinguish between electronics & non-electronics.

CAD 750 is the personal exemption for stay outside Canada for more than 7 days. The $60 rule is for gifts that are sent from outside Canada to someone in Canada. These two rules are independent of each other.

Excerpt from the customs page: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/E/pub/cp/rc4044/rc4044-e.html#P026

Gifts

While you are outside of Canada, you can send gifts free of duty and taxes to friends in Canada under certain conditions. To qualify, each gift must not be worth more than CAN$60 and cannot be a tobacco product, an alcoholic beverage, or advertising matter. If the gift is worth more than CAN$60, the recipient will have to pay regular duties on the excess amount. It is always a good idea to include a gift card to avoid any misunderstanding.

While gifts you send from outside Canada do not count as part of your personal exemption, gifts you bring back in your personal baggage do.

This I state from personal experience. We have a baby crib worth $75 and some other stuff, I was asked to pay duty only on the baby crib.
