Hi,
I lived in toronto area, canada for a year before moving to US on work visa (H1B1). Last year(2003) I was completely out of canada. I would like to know if I need to pay canadian taxes l as I have paid my US federal and state taxes.
I have canadian bank a/c & driver's license but no source of income in Canada except maybe some interest income from my bank a/c. I do not have much transaction thru my bank a/c except when I paid taxes for a part of the year (2002) away from canada.
If I need to pay canadian taxes please advice what kind of taxes I need to pay (federal/provincial). Do I fill out NR73 before doing so or pay as non-resident/resident ? Thanks.
Hi Sanjiv
Thanks for your support to the new immigrants in guiding them about the taxation system and other gevernment benefits.
I have arrived Toronto last month. My family is to join me in July. I have 2 yr old daughter. For claiming CCTB for her, do i need to wait for them to come or just apply now. Please guide me if any other scheme for childern is there. Somebody was telling me about daycare charges etc. etc.
From the website i have seen that for getting CCBT, they ask for the annual family income. As i am new immigrant, how can i fill my income. Please clarify!
Thanx in advance.

If you have canadian Drivers license and Canadian Medical Insurance , you are claiming Canadian residency and are bound to pay taxes on your "World Income" top canada .
PS: Tax evasion is a criminal offence and involves Jail - time

We will find a way or we will make one
I have only a PR card and SIN card. No driving licence or medical cards.
My worry is will there be any problem in getting in to Canada when I land in Canada next time after a gap of 2-3 years (I had left soon after taking immigration)
Hi,
I have read lot of posts about RESP. I am still not able to decide which company is the best for opening a RESP account. I am comparing between Global Education Trust, Heritage and Childern Education Fund. Can somebody guide me by giving some kind of comparatative analysis between these companies. I would appreciate help in this regards. Thanks
For Imigration purpose you are a PR as long as you satisfy the residency obligation (Chk residency obligations on - cic.gc.ca). You should not have problem in coming back to Canada as long as you do not stay outside Canada for more than 3 years at a time.
For tax purpose you can be a resident, non resident, deemed resident or deemed non-resident depending on you ties to Canada (Chk revenue Canada site for details). If you are not living here and only have SIN & PR card I think you will be considered deemed non resident and do not owe any taxes in Canada. Although you may want to file the return to when it is due.
Imigration & Taxation define residency in a different way and most of the time they are seperate from each other.
