Hi guys!
I am currently in Vancouver, and due to the job market not as aggressive as in Toronto or Calgary, I want to move out. But, I am undecided to whether to move to Calgary or Toronto. Calgary is booming, no doubt. If I see the cost of living, it's pretty high there, so it's even out considering even the high salaries. On the other hand, Toronto in not expansive to live, and almost similar to Calgary. I know I can afford a house in Toronto than Calgary. Also, I know more people in Toronto and so far nooone in Calgary. So, what do you guys think?
I am confused right now, and don't know how to go about it. Is there any chance, anyone from Alberta can guide me with respect to the salaries, lifestyle, how expansive it is, and the affordability factor?
Also, if people here can guide me about the job prospects in both the cities, I will really appreciate.
Thanks a lot, and waiting for response.
What is your career field and what kind of job are you looking for?

Please write about your career/background because its surprisng to hear you say its slow in BC.
BC's economy is doing extremely well and many companies are unable to hire enough workers. Schools are closing down due to lack of enrollment because people are working.
It is across most industries.

I am currently working as an Application Support Analyst with one of the leading internet company in Vancouver. Have about 7 years of experience (2 in Canada and 5 India).
Also, I saw a feature on CBC this evening about not so affordable housing in Calgary, where an average home costs about half a million dollars. Here in Vancouver too, it's not possible to buy a house. So, this left Toronto. I know few of the people in Toronto who own a really good and affordable townhouses in Toronto, and are doing well. So, I am actually more driven towards Toronto right now.
Been in Vancouver for the last one and a half years, and do not like it here. Traffic system, lack of IT opportunities etc. are the top of my mind right now in order to leave this place.
We recently moved to Seattle from Toronto. I am from Accounting Background and my husband is Mechinical Engineer. We have lots and lots of friends who moved from Toronto to Calgary, Edmonton (none of them were from Computer background) But they find it better in Calgary and edmonton.
Personaly I also feel there is too much competition in Toronto. If you are from Computer Industry you have better chance to look for more options in USA (spl. Seattle) Good Pay and they recognize the education here. After spending 7 years in Canada we feel that we wasted our time there. Look for options in USA. You would love it. and easier for someone in Vancouver than in Toronto.
My suggestion is, calgary is the most borred city i ever seen i lived there for 17years i just saw snow and cold now i am in toronto north. if i compare calgary and toronto, then toronto have fast life and every body in hurry and computer s job available loke accenture ati amd etc, but property tax is high but you can claim the tax in the personal income tax. calgary is the beautiful city but no white color job for brown the 99 percent who moved to calgary either they went back or they are donig some kind of labour jobs.
USA is the most worse place for live the biggest issue is healthcare no matter what kind of insurace
Hey Febreet
I am not sure about your field, but I am writing in General
We are comparing Toronto & Calgary here. There are some advantages & disadvantages of Calgary. Like
1. Housing - Its costly than Toronto, sure. Who knows what will be situation after few months. At present, rent as well as Buying is Too much in Calgary
2. Cost of Living - Yes its more costly than Toronto. I am talking about daily expenses for food like grocery etc. Its costly by 15-20 % more from Toronto.
3. Life - Its not like Toronto. Many people says its real Boring one. Ya if you like more Glamour kind of life like more hotels & restaurents, then Calgary is not good. Also Indian Groceries & such shops are only in one area say North East while in Toronto u will find at many places
Now comes most important. If you get job which pays at least 30-40 % more than Toronto, then Calgary is the place for you. Also since u r from Technical/ IT field, there are more options. Here you can meet people form ur own field, which helps in growing.
So before deciding plans to move Calgary or Toronto, think about this.
