Dear CD friends,
My purpose of writing this post is two fold. One is to announce the discovery of a good dentist at Hwy.10-Dundas (Mississauga) and also to ask if what he is doing is legal.
2 weeks back, I had a very bad tooth pain (Sunday). I had my original philipino dentist but have not been to her for around 2 years now since she somehow would finish my $1500 dental coverage in 3 months (besides me paying $300 for the 80-20 scheme that i have). So in a hurry, I walked into a Sri Lankan practice who were open on 6 days a week (Thursday is a holiday for them) (Note to Sankaracharya - Kumudam and Ananda Vikadan were free to read there). The receptionist was very nice and kind, spoke in Tamil and told me that i could see the dentist in 10 mins. She also told me that their office would take care of the 20% that i had to pay and that i need not pay for anything at all. This meant that they were giving me a 20% discount on govt. approved rates.
I met the Sri Lankan doctor and he was very nice. He took 2 x rays and examined the tooth and said that there was nothing wrong in it and that my teeth were all perfect. He also told me that i need not see him again but i told the receptionist that I wanted to clean my teeth and took an appointment for next week. Next week, I went there and there was a chinese doctor who cleaned my teeth very well and very carefully. They did not ask me to come back again and they even gave me a tooth brush and floss.
The next week, I got the bill from the insurance company. The first one was $107 (around $ 84 covered by insurance and $23 to be borne by me-which was discounted by the dentist ) and the second bill was $207 ($163 for the dentist and $44 for me). The biggest joke was that it was mentioned in the bill that it would be the only recipt that would be issued for me.I hence would "legally" get a $300 tax credit for my $1500 dental insurance. I know that there was some limit for medical bills before i can deduct this from my income, thus giving me a tax break but even then i feel that it is against the law for a dental practice to discount the 20% that i have to pay. I have heard that many mississauga dental practice do this. My question to Cd's is that, Is this lawful?
OTOH, I would higly recommend this practice to Cd's due to the fact that they are open on weekend, donot expect you to pay for anything and lastly b'cso they are very good in their work . Please PM me for their location (in needed).

Sidenote : Upon my 2 vistis there i found that 90% of their clients were tamil sri lankans. I found many grand parents as well as children (5-10) coming for dental check up. I have assumed that since they donot ask any money, everyone with dental insurance want to use the $1500 which otherwise would go waste.

My dentist does that all the time, ie give me a 20% discount. WHy would you consider it illegal. If the dentist is willing to write it off, so be it.
