Hi...

Was in the airline industry doing back office work in india. Even done my IATA . Was wondering if any one knows how to get airline jobs here in toronto, or if anyone is aware of any such vacancies. I have been looking through all the job sites such as workopolis, monster etc, but to no success. Could someone please guide me, I would be extremely grateful.
.. Thanks in advance.

My brother in law works in the travel industry and he tells me it's next to impossible to get airline jobs in Canada(even at the back office) and the majority are filled with internal referrals. He was working with Emirates in Dubai and he knows more than a hundred ex-Emirate employees from the Gulf who are in Canada now and 95% of them are not with an airline.

Also, if you are going to be working at the airport, you need 5 years of residency in Canada under the new security guidelines, which is a deterrant for most immigrants. See this...

"International and Landed immigrant applicants to the Aviation Management Program should be aware that the ability to obtain a valid security clearance is a condition of employment (Co-op or Graduate) with some international airports in Canada and is definitely a requirement for employment (Co-op or Graduate) with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority.

Students who have resided or worked outside of Canada within the last five years may have difficulty meeting Transport Canada’s information standards. Unfortunately, due to security requirements, the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, airline and airside tenants, Transport Canada, Nav Canada, the Department of National Defense, and many international airports across Canada may not consider applicants from International Students and Landed Immigrants who have resided or worked outside of Canada within the last five years. The foregoing is for your information only. Students should follow up with any prospective employer to determine their own candidacy."

If you want to work at a travel agency as travel consultant, that's a different matter, but most of the jobs are low paying 28-32K (if you land a permanent position) or 12-15$/hour on contract. It might help to get certified as a "Travel Consultant" or earn a "travel and Tourism Diploma" to get a foot in.

Hi Freakoutguy,

Here is the link to Transport Canada's website about airport clearance .....

http://www.tc.gc.ca/vigilance/sep/tscp/tscp_manual_standards.htm#2.1%20APPLICANTS

The rule about 5 year residency prior to employment is not carved in stone. Each applicant is assessed for security risk based on their past employment history and the documentation they provide for security purposes.

Finding a job in an airline here is challenging, though not impossible. There are lots of Indians in this business and quite few of them in senior positions. Opportunities here are fewer due to absence of "City" offices for airlines as they heavily rely on Consolidators or Agents for sales (...and the things are moving in the same direction in India as well now). Airport business is mostly handled by ground handlers like GlobeGround, Handlex & Swissport and their wages are TERRIBLE.

All I will say at this time is that if aviation is your passion, get a CPL and move back to India or the US where there is a shortage of Pilots and will continue to be the same for quite some time to come as Indian Skies have just opened up....and the best "marketshare" wars are yet to begin!

Emirates has just announced that they will be starting operations in October and have advertised for jobs in Toronto Star. Also, check AC Jazz as they are also looking for people. AC should be conducting its Flight Attendant's recruitment pretty soon....followed by Air Transat as they all do in this season.
