I think, Opening Pair is settling in. They both, Jaffer & Karthik, are here to stay.

Laxman is done. He will have to live rest of his life with that one Epic Inning.

What I meant was that, unlike his earlier days, he is not the match-winner anymore.
He is scoring runs and even centuries, but not really coming through when his team needs him to get a big score and hold the innings together.
He is getting out at crucial stages and not coming through when needed.
The scores that he is getting are mostly increasing his personal tally of runs and centuries - a lot like what Gavaskar was doing in the final stages of his career.
He still is the most accomplished batsman in the team and everyone looks up to him to deliver when needed and as the cornerstone of the battling line-up, however, in the last year or so, he's not delivering the goods.
He seems distracted and less than half of what he used to be a few years go.
He used to be able to take apart any bowling attack and carry the game single handedly.

I'm not suggesting that we drop him - all I am saying is that it's time to start grooming a replacement, because that's going to take quite a while.

My preference is to drop Agarkar, go with three fast bowlers (both in one-days and tests) - Zaheer Khan, Pathan and Sreesanth.
They are all young, eager to impress and have potential as true fast bowlers, rather than military medium and "little bit here and little bit there" kind of bowling of Agarkar.

Make these three fairly permanent members of the team, build them, groom them, coach them - hire fast bowling coaches from abroad, if necessary.
In other words, invest in them.

I think you will agree that Agarkar cannot spring up any dramatic and remarkable performances all of a sudden that he hasn't done in the last 10 years.
Therefore, every game that he plays is a missed opportunity for Pathan or Sreesanth.

So you prefer to keep poor performers and groom them! Nice logic. Keep it up!!

Both Zaheer and Sreesanth are in the team ....... as far as Pathan is concerned, his performance has not been good ..... last 10 matches he has taken 7 wickets to 13 for Agarkar ........ I wish Pathan makes a comeback to international cricket ....but as of now he need to work on his bowling ....

I can't think of any one else who is more redundant and unnecessary than Agarkar right now.
I personally watched him get those series of ducks against Australia.
His skills are shocking, to say the least.

The only other cricketer in recent times who was even poorly skilled than Agarkar was Robin Singh.
His only value was his fielding skills in the cover region.
If you added the runs he saved plus the runs he scored he was probably worth his position in the one-day squad.

I have lost touch with the national cricket circuit within India, but there's got to be a good, young fast bowler who we can train and groom.

Bottom line is - if Agarkar is the best fast bowler we have got and there's no hope of a better replacement anytime in the near future, then I'm afraid, we'll not be winning very many matches in the next little while, esp. test matches.

Once Kumble is gone, India simply won't be able to take 20 wickets in 5 days to win a match.

Regarding Pathan, his one-day bowling record is actually pretty good.
It is better than Agarkar's in both one day and tests, both per match average as well as run-wicket average.
He's been in international cricket for barely 2 years - I think grooming him is a much better bet than sticking to Agarkar.

Well you sure go a long way back ... when was that 99-00 and he claimed 11 wickets in 3 games also did not matter. Infact he was instrumental in India beating Australia In Australia with a 6 wicket haul in the second innings .... Australia sent packing for less then 200 !!!!! dont know what skills you are looking for in a bowler!!!!
