I have an iron which was given as a gift by one my friends who lives in UK. Its a 3pin UK socket. In order to run it over here what should i do. One of my friends told me that i will have to buy an adapter socket which will have 2 flat pins (North American Standard) output. But my questions is will i get over here that adapter or i have to buy it from UK as iam trying to run an equipment manufactured in Europe in North America .In the past i had brought couple of electronic equipments from india with an adapter socket bought from india (india to north america).

Hi jagmag,
Most of the appliances that are for use in UK and the Europe are of 220 volt 50 cycles. If any of these latest equipment have embedded electronics in them, then, they will not function here in the North American continent. It will be interesting to note that the makers of the very same appliances there, also feed us here, but to the local specifications and codes. Call them there on their toll free line and wait for the rep and find out the same. Now you know that it came from the horse's mouth, rather than from a guy on the net. You know what the appliance is, what the make is, and what all it does and its cost.
Don't forget, that some of the appliances may draw more current than the local outlets can provide, which is: 15 amp 110 volt 60 cycles is the local supply. You do the math and come to a decision. Some of the cords here will not handle more than 1500 watts at the max. Also you will need an expensive cable too.
If you have to buy step up transformers and adaptors to fit the plugs and local wall outlets etc., you are just wasting your time running and looking for shops, suppliers, and shelf parts etc., Just think what will be your position when it packs up and you need some small part for it? Are you going to UK to find it?
Alternately gift it to some one there and buy another one to suit the local power supply here and of course the same make as you gifted. Did I say something nasty....? Well this is only one of my suggestions. There are other ones too and you might not like it.
