Hello CDs,
I have landed in Canada a couple of months back. I had to return to USA to finish my project. I am planning to drive down with my stuff to Canada in my old Toyota.
I had a couple of questions regarding bringing the car to Canada (I have already gone through the site http://www.riv.ca):" rel="nofollow">LINK
1) Suppose I dont 'Import' the car to Canada and just drive through the border to use the car for the first 45 days, can I later sell the 'US Registered' car to car dealers in Canada? Will I suffer a huge loss? I purchased the car for about 3k.
2) If I fax the US DMV title to the US border post and import it to Canada, and if the Canadian Safety inspector rejects the car during inspection , can I still sell this car to dealers in Canada without it being registered in USA/Canada?
The problem is that this is a used car and I found that there have been a a recall. I have to check whether the recall procedures have been completed by the previous owner. If not, I will not be able to get a recall clearence certificate.
However, I dont want to sell the car since it will be extremely helpful for the first few days in Canada (finding a house, job interviews etc). It will be cheaper than renting a car.
I request the CDs who have gone through the import process to guide me regarding this.
Regards
VL
Quote:You can drive it around for 45 days, but I think you'll have trouble selling the car to Canadian retailers without properly importing it first.

Quote:You should be able to take the car to a dealer and they will fix the recall for free.

Quote:Of course, completely understandable.

Thank You very much CDs for your reply.
I think the best way is to get the recall procedures done.
One last question. From the date I enter Canada to the date I complete the registration procedures in Canada lets say there is a gap of about 30 days.
1) During these 30 days before registration in Canada, will my insurance from USA be valid in Canada? If not, what to do for these 30 days - since driving without insurance is dangerous!
2) Can insurance from US be transferred to Canada after Canadian Registration?
Any other tips about driving from California to Vancouver is welcome (places to stay on the way, driving on I-5 etc)
Regards
