Guys ,

I would appreciate some serious advice . I have 8 years of Development / Analysis experience and now REALLY wish to enter Project Management. If I was to think about 2 years hence to equip myself with better suited Management credentials which of the 02 would be better -

1. MBA
2. PMP certification .

If MBA then which business schools are good for an MBA in IT ?

IMO, an MBA is more useful if you plan to shift fields, let's say to banking. Otherwise, the opportunity costs of an MBA will not be justified by the salary you make.

I'm a little skeptical whether a Canadian MBA will vault you to a position where you'll be making 30-40K more than your current salary.

Consider these points...if you want to go to a good MBA school, you either need to go full time (and give up your job), or have a school that offers an executive MBA within commuting distance. Are these options available to you?

Secondly MBA degrees cost a lot of money, and I'm not sure the ROI in Canada is worth it. I have a friend who graduated from Rotman and is now making around 90K, pretty lousy in my opinion for a top MBA. Most mid to senior level people in IT make close to that. Top 10 US school MBA grads get 150K and above.

A PMP seems more relevant to the IT Management field. Also, it allows you to work while you're completing it. It's also much cheaper!

Thanks Alexm ,

I will inquire at the Universities here in Halifax if they have an Exec MBA option . Although if I read your mail correctly PMP is sufficient to propel one successully on a Project Manager related job .

I have done management related courses during my Graduation / Post Graduation courses but now I am really interested in pursuing Project Management career as I feel I can add more value there .

To get into IT PM position, PMP is a better suited credential.

To appear in PMP exam, the requirement is to have certain amount of PM experience and training... do check the details at http://www.pmi.org" rel="nofollow">LINK

If I were you, and had time to do on campus courses, I would have gone for Stanford Certification in Project Management instead of any Exec MBA.

Regards.

Hiya Fido
Most often, if you are working at a progressive organization, they encourage you to take PMP courses that they pay for and even have their internal PM certifications that you can avail of and hence move into Project Management.
I am sure talking it over with your mentor/ people manager at work would help.

All the best
b

Thanks for the inputs and am sorry to the OP for having inadvertently hijacked the thread .

Yes I would look forward to PMP certification and Yes again the Company does have an excellent Training policy and we keep onr eceiving invites ....... but for the time we can afford out of our busy schedule .

But I would start working on that . I am really interested to self exploit myself where I can provide max contribution to the project by being the PM .....

Thanks .
