hey guys,

I went to "golden groceries" and bought the "roti thingy" should be cool now.... thanx... apsingla

tamilkuravan....thanx so much for the warm welcome...i absolutely love canada so far, everyone is so friendly (unlike the U.K!)...we've already sorted out our cell phones, home phone and internet, we did lots of research and got a good deal through rogers, we were without cell phones and the internet for like 10 days and it felt as if we were non-existent! so that was one of our priorities. i've even got my full drivers license ( as they directly transfer the U.K one to a canadian one, without any tests even though we drive on the other side!), so we are browsing for cars, but in no rush as we are in a good location for shopping and transport links, but definately before the winter we'll have one ( will look out for old women wanting to sell!) In regards to the home mortgage, i was guessing that it will take a longer time to get approved as we are going to move out in 5 months, at that point we would have been working for say 3 months, what are the chances of getting a mortgage that quick ( on a one bed apt).
I think a Quixstar pamphlet came in the mail with the toronto star...it did look too good to be true..will keep away from others that u mentioned too.
THANK YOU so much for offering to take us shopping, it really was difficult for us to carry the chapati flour and rice bag etc back! but the basic stuff we have already bought and its just regular everyday things now, and we're very fortunate to have canadian superstore and food basics and price chopper just 5 mins away! but again thanx for offering, and i would seriously do the same for any new comer when we get a car, because we really did suffer, with the damn shopping! I"ll definately message u soon

thanx trinity for the welcome!

kumar_vadivelu....im not too sure about which courses are available for english improvement, but ill look around and if i find something, ill PM u, also if u want anything proof read ( like job applications, resume, covering letters), let me know and ill PM u my email ID.

Hello Ajay and Bhavini,
Thanks for your update. Looks like you are coping up pretty good !. You can buy a trolley sort of thing (in many grocery stores) in which people normally wheel away their heavy stuff (till you buy a car). It may be around $10 or you can get some deals from our CD classifieds or Craigslist. Be careful about the money that you spend for each and every day. Your money may come down pretty soon until you have a job to replenish it. I am not sure as to how fast you want a job / what kind of job that you are looking for but Costi and Skills for change can get you atleast a vounteer job. The only negetive aspect is that they will teach you one month English and resume proofing which is quite a waste given the country that you are from ( UK). All these classes are free and some even give you bus fare. Remember that they have quite a bit of waiting time and hence it is prudent to register now and then decide if you want to attend when the call comes.
You can get a mortgage quite easily and so when the times comes for yuu to buy a house, you can then look for a mortage. Quite a few people, buy a big house, rent many room and then pay for the mortgage (atleast a significant part of it).
Canaidan Superstore is pretty expensive. I go there and buy only the clearance or the deal items. Food basics is good.
Other cheap store are
1. No frills (for groceries)
2. Walmart (The cheapest price in town for other items from cloths to electronics.). MAybe similar to Harrods or MArk & Spencer of London.
3. Tim Hortons - The coffee is great
4. Wendy's - The burgers are cheap and great

To Kumar Vadivelu!
Welcome to Canada. Donot be much worried about your english language speaking skills. As you explore Canada, you will find that many donot know proper English and English will not be a detterent for you to find a job. However it is good to know and improve your English Skills.
ESL (English as a second language) classes are available at many major street corners and you can enroll in it. All these classes are free. Besides, in your every day life you can improve your english in the following ways
1. Read newspapers and books
2. Watch TV with the Captions on
3. Talk to people during the day in English
4. You can call the toronto library story telling line and they will tell you a story over the telephone. Listen carefully to how they pronounce words. It will help you a lot. It has helped many sri lankan refugees learn proper english and if it has helped them, so can it help you.
I am sure that other CD's will give you more tips.
For your other questions , please do a SEARCH on the charcha. All the information taht you require has been discussed a million time. After you read them, you can then post your quries.

TK A

hey tamilkuravan,

we've already joined COSTI...they seem a bit useless though, like u mentioned it takes a long time to get the ball rolling for them, and as newcomers we are impatient! but we have been and lets see what they can do for us, have also posted resume on various sites etc.

we've been to tim hortons too, couldnt wait to find out what all the fuss was about...and yeah its cool...prices are so much more reasonable than starbucks.

we bought all our electrical stuff too...hairdyer, blender, toaster etc and yup walmart was excellent.

actually i have a question, we bought this "punjabi atta" from canadian superstore to make rotis and it was more like the flour for nan ( like plain flour) and so we bought another type from an indian store, the one with a tiger picture on it, called 'sher' i think, and thats much better..but is there anything thats in between white and brown flour for rotis?, (some thing more healthy)

ajaybhavini,

I was going thorugh the replies and just thought that since everyone is talking about Quixtar I should contribute too.

It's like you know ... when you want to take admission in a medical school you ask a medical student or a teacher of that university not someone who is in engineering field. Altough both are good people their intensions may be right but they do not know about the subject.

So this is true for Quixtar too, We as a husband and wife with 2 kids are doing This Quixtar for almost 2 years now. We started in Canada and now my husband works for Boeing in Seattle..... the best part is we did not lose a penny from Quixtar business that we created in Canada and still continuing in USA. because Noth American market is considered to be one. So basically i can manage my business sitting in USA. We have, at present this business in UK, Australia, India, Sweden ..... (Quixtar is in 67+ countries)

Like you have decided to stay away from it because 80% people THINK its too good to be true... you are also going to say to other new immigrant... but the fact is you know nothing about it.

They do not advertise to join. Flyer in Globe & Mail .... hard to believe.... maybe some one in your apartment building have done it. check again it is QUIXTAR?

My point is make your own decision after having a good look at it. Quixtar IBOS do not look for all people, we do understand that like in any other market, if we ask people only 3 out of 10 would like to do it.
And one more thing if someone says hello to you and ask you about the business, chances are you look confident, educated and dress up smart. So take it as a compliment. We do not approach eveyone.

I agree with m2611 there is a different thread on this you can go ahead and read and in there too I have said do Re-search not Search. You can find negatives about anything when you google it. May it be Walmart- Microsoft, Mcdonald's. I know people who do not like Walmart.... I know people who does not like BAY.... but both stores exist and they both have separate market.

My point here is not to prove anything, we have not even started it for that particular reason but I really feel bad when someone tells about something that they never have experienced it personally.. that we love Quixtar and we are happy about it.

I have lots of friends who did not join but we still have the best relationships... it depends upon the person how they take it. Mature people do not get upset depending upon who joins or who does not. Bad examples are in every field.

Anyway, enough if it.

regarding Atta, we are using Sher too because MEERA is not available in US. Meera was my first choice but Sher is not bad either.
