As Jake3d mentioned you can go the equifax website, downloand the 'consumer credit report update form', complete all the details and send it to equifax so that they can start the resolution process. However, you would have to provide the 'proof' of having paid the same. To speed the process, you may want to get a letter written by the company who informed 'credit bureau' of this unpaid amount.

Generally, it happens that if some one has a dispute with some company over some product and do not pay their charges, they will send it to collection, no matter how small the amount is. The collection agency would report it to the bureau and then would contact the person to try to get the money recovered. Suppose the person settles and pay them, generally they would close the file but would deliberately or otherwise forget to inform the credit bureau about the debt paid and file closed (To teach the person a lesson) and the credit bureau would not clear the entry as they were not informed. In that case, the persons 'credit score' is affected and he has to do this extra work to get the record cleared by providing proof to the credit bureau.

It is not clear from your post the exact reason it is showing on your brothers credit report but none the less it is his 'credit' which is affected and he would have to take the steps to clear it him self.

I would be writing some articles on mortgages and credits. The first article on 'mortgage basics' has already been posted on this site for a couple of weeks now and my next article would be on 'Credit - Do's & Dont's' which will answer some of the gerneal questions regarding credit. However, for our fellow desis, I am always available for 'free advice' on mortgage and credit. If he wants, he can contact me and after looking the report, I would be in a position to advise him the best course of action and can also help him in getting mortgage, if he so desires.
