Dear fellow Desis,
I work for a good company, earning a reasonably good money in an accounting position. Recently, my company decided to outsource a majority of the accounting work from India.
My dilemma is
-Should I be a proud Indian as this step is going to help my country in creating jobs, removing poverty, improving infrastructure, forex reserves etc
-Should I be part of the Canadian group, who thinks that India is a dump country and Indians are useless people, and try to block this attempt by my company, just to make sure that my job is protected in the long run, I could pay my bills, my mortgage, my grocery, my car loan etc.
I don’t know what to do. Can anyone help?

Please don't give titles like "Please Help" - give something meaningful. It will help us use this forum in a better way.
You will also get more responsis if your title is specific.
Thanks.

Indeed it is a dilemma you are in.
Whatever you do, you feel a sense of loosing. If the outsourcing go to India (or it could be any other country like China, Taiwan or Russia etc. in some cases) because the bigwigs of the company want to do it, you may not be able to stop them as they think primarily of themselves and/or the stock holders of the company and the bottomline, and do not care about the employees.
However, I do not agree with the comments that India is a dump country and Indians are useless because if that were true, your company's bosses & most other fortune 1000 companies would not have decided to outsource their work to India as not only they save money and improve their bottomeline but also get a better quality job from India.
None the less, you have to join your fellow employees and try to stop this (and good luck to you) otherwise you will be branded as the black sheep or not being a team player. Moreover, as you mentioned you have your own priorities and commitments to look after. Secondly, you seem to be a professional in your field and I believe you will not have problem in finding a suitable job with some other company who might not join the BPO bandwagen.
Tough choice, eh..

If you have studied accounting - ie. business - you should know that the first rule of business is focus on the bottom line, and the second rule is COMPETITION.
Competition - whether it is from an internal source or external - always betters each player, toughens the rules, brings in new standards and ways of doing things. If your company is outsourcing abroad, it stands to reason that it will be saving money in the short-term but you as an employee will also be getting more - and a different variety of - work in the long run. That will upgrade your skills, make you more competent in a different sphere within your own role as an accountant, and what can be more valuable to any employer than a well-rounded employee?
I always say there is work enough for anyone willing to do it.

In my opinion, the first and formost duty on your part to ensure and serve the interests of your employer to his best expectations and standards. In that process, if Inida is benefitted, just go ahead.
Do not forget, considering your moral responsibility and accoutability, you should show highest standards of confidentiality, professionalism, fairness and honest in your expression of opinions, actions and statements. That is the way we have to prove that India is Great and belong to good human beings.
Long term should be your period to watch. do not go for short term benefits for your country or yourself particularly at the cost of relationships and future.
Ensure India and you are help in top bracket of performance in all respects'
My general opinion:
Is it going to be beneficial to your company to outsource to India? If so, you should not get involved in sabotaging those efforts. If it is truly beneficial to your company then its just a matter of time before they do it anyway. The competition may do so and force your company to follow suit , in order to remain in the business. Long-term you would lose anyway right? Do your co-workers know about this fact?
But:
Isn't the decision your bosses? Unless its your decision too. How do your office dynamics work? Are all of you expected to publicly take a stand for/against the outsourcing. Then you may not want to openly challenge your colleagues. Is there anyway you can sit on the fence? You dont have to agree that India is a dump but you can point out that outsourcing may be the best course of action if the company has to survive, and that its a matter of time anyway.
It has nothing to do with any country being better than any other in the first place.
