Hi,

I came to Canada from India 6 months back and struggling to get a job in GTA. I have ~28 years of experience in Quality(ISO standards) and was working with a National body of standard making with Govt of India. I have been trying to get a job in my field in Canada(Quality assurance)but am not getting any opportunities/openings. The equivalent organisations in Canada refuse on the pretext of my having 'no canadian experience' although the experience I have in this field is that of International level.

I am a qualified Engineer from IIT and I have had my degree verified by WES.
Realising the scenario here and taking a few pointers from canadian desi, I am willing to go for a retail job as well. I tried in that area but have not got much success there as well. I'm looking for a job (sales or any other retail job) in GTA.

The main problem I am facing whenever I go for a retail /sales interview is that I am classified as being over-qualified, indeed so with an experience of 28 years to back me. I have also tried modifying my resume to suit the jobs as they have been advertised, but to no avail.

I am an excellent communicator and have no problem whatsoever with English as a language. Also I am good at teaching and have been teaching students in the past in science subjects.

I do not want to loose hope but at the same time I do not know what else to look upto. All the areas are turning out to be closed. Any pointers/help or suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Canadahome

It looks you have good expereince.
Let me know one thing?
Do u want job only in GTA, any specific reason.
If not then try other places like Alberta & Saskatoon.
I know cost of living & other things as not as good in Alberta
But if u r getting job in own field with better salary in Alberta, why not try?

I am not against Retail or other similar jobs, but how long u will do?
Instead of wasting time in this jobs, give a try, u will get success.

If u r interested let me know by sending email

Canada home:

1) are your resumes being responded to by employers? are you getting numerous calls for interviews?(whether professional or retail jobs)?

2) At the interviews, do you have any problems in answering questions - are the questions unusual or do they stump you? Do you provide a reference list?

3) do you send a thank you card within 24 hours of the interview? or thank you letter etc?

4) Are you only applying to advertised jobs or are you also networking and trying to find work through word of mouth?

5) Have you gone to an employment resource centre (or your local HRSDC) office to see if you can get assistance with job searching?

6) Are there any associations you can join?

It is very difficult to get a technical job of your field or position you have worked in India or out side Canada . IITians do get good jobs . You may get a low paid entry level job ,if you are the one look younger than what you are. I have met one of the leading writer on one of the leading employment website. He himself agreed that in Canada , ones employment opportunities diminish as he approaches 42. Though on paper there is no discrimination of the age, the discrimination is inevitable on a person with more than a two decades of experience in a foreign country, in the pretext of his inability to be flexible and learning new things. His answer was not to mention your year of passing a degree ( say passed M. Tech, don’t mention the year - in 1980) . Try to make up your language- both of your body and your resume, look younger and simple . I don’t say not to tell truth. Don’t say what is not required. You have to be more a learner than the one bringing tonnes of experience.
I am almost 50 now. I got a good entry level job in one of the leading company in its industry recently. I would like to mention what I have done, which may or may not be suitable or liking to you.
I took OSAP and enjoyed the school. I learned things in a Canadian way . Got my local certificate and entered the Canadian job market. Got a job even before completing the program. More Jobs are available for the school leavers than those outside the school. More so, because the schools want to market their school programs, and employers do believe the schools. Going to school has helped me to change mentally to less than half my age. Every immigrant has an advantage of seeing the outside world of Canada and has inherently more experience than any Canadian born individual. You will be much brighter than those half your age in the school , and you will be the one to get the job first. You can payback the school fee once you are in the employment.

In Canada no one is enjoying . Every one is struggling to pay bills. One for the used Corolla other for the BMW. Some for the rent while others for mortgage. If any one is left , he is for the insurance of car /mental /dental etc.

A wonderful news and a favourable situation for the Foreign Trained Engineers entering the job markets and seeking recognition as an Engineer in a field of their studies they did in their Native country.
They are dropping their application fees for the new immigrants who approach them.
As a part of their new program called the "Engineering Interim Training Financial Credit Program, The Professional Association will waive the $230. fee for the new immigrants who arrive into Ontario and apply with in the first six months of their arrival.
They may also register in the Engineering Interim Training Program for the first year at no cost, provided they meet the eligibility criteria established by the PEO.
http://www.peo.on.ca/FCP/FCPI.html" rel="nofollow">LINK If this link does not function please walk through the next one and also call them and find out the exact location of it.
Those who landed in Canada and in Ontario, between November 1st, 2006 and April 30th, 2007 will have time until October 31, 2007 to apply and avail the facilities provided by them.
While this may be good news to the Foreign Trained Engineers in Ontario, we will have to wait and see how well this translates into actual approval of their credentials and the credits that they get for their Training and years of Experience they profess and a few with invaluable ones and from numerous other countries.

Good luck and a great success to you .

Freddie.

Hi
Thank you all for taking out time to make a response to me. Some hints are indeed helpful. I have answered most of the things below:

Rajuu:
What you suggest makes a lot of sense and it is indeed a good way to go about things but at this stage I am finding it a little dificult to enter into a committment in the form of taking a loan like OSAP for any further studies. Right now it seems like taking a loan would be a big liability given the limited financial resources one has. But indeed it is a good approach to go about things. Can you shed some more light as to what would be courses which will have a good market value once done? To say that once course is done, it will be quite definite that jobs would be available in that field. Can you refer to some specific field?

morning rain:
1) My resume is being responded to by the employers. I am getting calls from employers and the interviews also go very well. But I am told that I have a very good experience and over qualified for the job. Indeed they want younger people for the jobs. This is true for retail. But in my field I am not getting any calls at all. They ask for Canadian experience though my experience is very much that of International origin. I have served on various national (in India) and International committees.

2) So far I have not had any problems answering the questions in the interviews. Infact they go extremely well.

3) I have not sent any thank you mails and I have made a note of that point. Thanks for the suggestion.

4) I am unable to network much with anyone here and also have got very few work opportunities through word of mouth. I would really want to network with people since I have absolutely no acquaintances/family in Canada.

5) Yes I have contacted all the organisations mentioned by you, but having so far attended these sessions and incorpoating their ideas, I have been unable to land a job, due to reasons I mentioned above.

6) I have exhasted this option as well but have not gained anything so far.

mumdxbcan :

I am looking for a job in GTA primarily because my family is managing to find some kind of work or other here. Right now it will not be a financial possibility to move to another province, unless there are very lucrative opportunities formy profile in other provinces. I did check for my profile but did not find anything much in other provinces.
But I will definitely forward you my Resume in case you feel something good is there for me.

Thank you all for responding to my situation. I am hoping there is some way I am able to get an opportunity or a break.
