Canada - An Immigrants Mirage
By:

We all have dreams and we do strive to be successful in life in our own chosen and selected paths. We all want to do something important and that’s what the “struggle for existence” is.

I came from India to US on an IT job to silicon Valley . Worked there for 2 years and saw what a developed country like US had to offer. Felt the excitement in the air and the will of people to succeed in life . People worked more hours then usual because they wanted to spend more than what they could afford . Life was good and going well.

Not that I was not doing good in India. I was working in Bangalore for the Top 5 consulting firms and making good money there too. But the chance of coming to the "Land of opportunities" and making it "BIG" and attaining the "American dream" was always there . Some due to listening from friends how good USA was and some seeing the ever-increasing exchange rate of the US$ against the Indian Rupee

Life does has its good and Bad. When the IT bubble "Burst" as they say, most of the folks around lost their Jobs. Some went back to India, some like me who had filed for Canadian immigration felt lucky to move to another place close than selling everything and moving to India. So there our life started.

We sold off most of our stuff and drove up north - to US-Canada Border on I-5 feeling great that now we have our own country where we will no more be "ALIENS". We crossed the border and moved into a small place and started our life. Did not get an IT job as I did not have Canadian experience. Canadian experience for an IT job, did not understand it Term for the 1st month . I was thinking whether the computers in Canada are different from what is made all over the world or perhaps there Java, Microsoft or Oracle is different. Well , we had good savings to life was not that bad. Saw people around us doing labour jobs not that they are bad but doctors and MBA's doing labor jobs is even unseen in India.

Staying there for more than 2 months and seeing the way new immigrants around me were surviving , I was really questioning which is a developed country , India or Canada. Well, I had my part o contribute to Canada also . Took a Job at the Departmental store for $9 can per hour . That was a lot of downfall. From $65 US per hour to 9$ can per hour is a lot of downgrade. People could not understand Why I have a BMW 3 series but I am working in a departmental store.

What do I explain them . Well , stayed in Canada for 8 months and moved back to US for a Car company project and filed for my Green Card .

Enough of Canada for me for now .I guess I am not strong like other Immigrants here who are toiling their lives here for years now hoping that they will make it "BIG" one day .

My frank (personal) opinion, India is better than Canada if you have to work in the night's for 9$ can and spend your life waiting for your BIG day

Hi CHandresh,
The top portion of my post is actually copied drom the post by LOSER on page 1` and I just gave an explanation of difference between the immigration policies of SIngapore , Gulf and Canada. I did not say or atart with " Why did you..." but my actual reply starts from " May all fellow desis note..." Hope it is now clarified

Why did you bother to migrate
If you are living in a Paradise like Singapore as you claim then why the Hell did you bother even to migrate to Canada. ...?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

May all Fellow desis note that Singapore does not offer status ( Permanent residency ) except under exceptional cases with stringent conditions. Also no matter how long you work in Middle east ( Gulf ) you are not given status and neither can a immigrant worker own any property. Also our passports have to be surrendered and yearly work visas extended to be able to stay there. So we always have found and continue to find people from Singapore and Middle east who had very good jobs there but still choose to immigrate to Canada for future. They know that after a certain stage money is not everything and move to Canada for status, safety, investment and above all childrens education. ( All these moves are done knowing fully well about Canada ) Why did you think somebody came here ,failed , and after going back why did he choose to come back and try his luck again.?
The answer is also hidden in their posts . Canada does offer something more than their well paying jobs .
Remember a fellow desi who came here twice and lost his PR and how he is thinking of trying to renew the status or still not being able to overcome the loss of PR etc..
Well , enough said on this topic. I am not criticizing anyone but we can see their intent and desperation to succeed in Canada , through their very own posts.
Good luck to all
;)

You seem to be highly misinformed or sadly mistaken!

Without going into much details:

'May all Fellow desis note that Singapore does not offer status ( Permanent residency ) except under exceptional cases with stringent conditions'

It is not difficult to get permanent residency in Singapore and then Citizenship within two years of getting PR. I was a PR for last 10 years and gave it up last year. My elder brother is a PR and has not opted for citizenship, and my eldest brother and family have been citizens for quite sometime. And none of us got it on basis of family ties mind you - totally on our merits.

Atleast 50 families that I am close to in Singapore are either citizens or PRs (very few are PRs now). I have some friends, infact my best friend too, who were offered PR when they applied for a 6 months work permit and before they completed 2 years of PR, they were offered citizenship by the government.

The only condition that is placed on continuation of PR (which is renewed after 5 years usually), is that the PR should be gainfully employed in Singapore - which means you don't have to be in Singapore but should earn an income from employment or business there and contribute to retirement funds!

I do not wish to comment on rest of the matter - sometimes ignorance can be bliss! (in that people in Canada will not feel how they are leading a life inferior to Singapore!)

Agreed, Chandreah boss. I am knowing so many Indians who in 5 years having to got Singapore passports, you knowing red and gold one, ekdum royal lagta hai- Malalujah Singapura or something like writing on it.
Many my friends coming to visit me from S'pore and tolding me I am yera to be staying here, why I leaving HK for US and Canada, Y not to go to S'pore.
I am taking them to office also and Canadian people being amazed at unka knowledge. And S'pore peoples thinking Canadians not to be on ball in same field.
One my friend also taking posting from Canadian company from S'pore to come here and ek saal baad after contract finishing, leaving and saying to me, yaan ke log lacking dedication and professionalism in comparison to S'pore.
I am only visiting S'pore many years ago, never living there, so I am not knowing life there, but they also tolding me that driving in cities only allowed every other day and big tax on cars, many other negative things, lakin saying sab milake, S'pore hazaar times better.
Khaanaa bhi mast! Sharaab bhi mast, Hotelon mein service mast.
I am to remembering very old picture coming on Hindi movie channel in classical afternoon series. Black and white, not remembering actors from purana zamana. Nice boat scene singing 'Rassaa saya re rassaa sayang sayang re, jeevan mein ek baar to aana S'pore' , or something like that perhaps you can to be clearing picture. What this 'raasa saaya' song- all my S'pore friends singing?
But just thinking that picture from 50's yaan 60's and tab bhi S'pore ka virtues gaa rahe hain, Kuch to sala koobhi rahega. Kahete hai to Goh sahib ne aur kamaal kiyela hai uske baad, aur yeh bhi kehte hai ke S'pore ka PM highest paid govt. official duniya mein hai. US president se bhi ziadaa? Such?
