Another Indian Passport Renewal Question

Hi,
My passport is expiring in March 2008
I would like to visit US in December 2007
US Embassy toronto website indicates that passport have to be valid atleast 6 months after the travel date which makes it June 08 wheras my passport is valid only till March 08.
So can i go the Indian consulate and request passport renewal today. My VISA interview is in October so i would like to have the passport renewed before that.
Does it have to be 6 months before expiry that one can renew the passport or can it be done earlier. I fall within the 6 months Sep07 to March 08 is 5 months but i was just curious.

When the passport is expiring after it usual maturity, it is considered a new passport application.

From what I recall, you have to provide the passport information (including number, issue date and expiry date) while booking your appointment online.
If so, your passport information will change after you get a new passport from Indian consulate.
I don't know if the passport number changes or not, but the issue and expiry dates change for sure.
I am not sure whether it will create a problem during the visa appointment.

Mine is expiring in Feb 08 and I'll be going sometime next week to the Indian consulate.

the nvars system asked for passport number but did not ask for issue/expirry date.
Does anyone know if the new passport has the same number as the old passport. If not then i have to think of something

The passport number will change for the new Indian passport.

I think its worth waiting for the interview and request them to stamp the visa on the new passport. As long as both are original and authentic, and you have a valid case, it should not be an issue.
Ofcourse, to be absolutely safe, you can cancel this appointment, but you wont be able to apply for a new one till you get the new passport (or PP number..)
