I was talking to a friend last night. He said something like this "hazaar things going on yaar, mein aur meri thanhaayi". I did not get it. I just kept quiet. I know that he is going thru a difficult time. Is this "thanhaayi" related to his problems? Is there a context? What is the meaning of it? Is it a urdu word?

Hi "thanhaayi" in literal sense means lonliness, in this part of the world we can relate it to depression. If you know of his problems you can, may be try to assist him geting over it.

Hi,
Ya, as peacock 1 said, it means loneliness.
The phrase "mein aur meri tanhai" is probably not to be read too deeply into as I know many Indians use this phrase after it was used in the spoken parts of a song in the movie, "silsila" (you know, the one that goes, "ye kahan agaye hum"?)
So, your friend might simply be going through a depressed phase.
Wow! I did not know that. I knew something wasn't right in his private life (marital issue), but the dude will not open up. Let me see what I can do within my limits.
