Any suggestions for keeping out the odurs of food from the house/apartments and clothes .
I have an infant so avoid cooking 'masaledaar' food very often but sometimes when I cook my desi style food esp. 'tadkas' ,curries etc , the smell of oinions and masalas stays for a long time and the clothes on other rooms too absorb them ( which i usually realise when I go out wearing those jackets and forget to put perfume!).
I have used sprays etc but am not very happy with their results.
Please share your experiences on this issue.

Hi there,

You need a good Air Purifier. The one that has the capacity to clean and kill more germs, bacteria, moulds, smells & dust-mites and much more.

I had the same problem as yours and I bought this Air Purifier, believe me I am impressed and now i can cook any masalader desi food, without worrying for my little one, or for the smell of food on my clothes.

If you need more info email me on

I guess you can post the information here. I don't think that would be deemed an advertisement.

close bedroom doors when cooking. One step further..ensure closet doors are closed as well.

Secondly - light a candle (scented ie/ vanilla or other food related scent) while cooking. If that doesnt work..try this:

take a pona (dishtowel) and wet it thorougly. wring it so its not dripping and hang it nearby (ie/ a meter or so by the stove. This should absorb soem of the smells. it works to an extent.

Make sure your windows are open or have the exhaust on full. Its funny but we make tarka regularly .. but I dont have any problems unless I add garlic to the food.

Change your clothes just before leaving the house..AND THE BIGGEST THING OF ALL:

Dont wash your hair..and cook with wet hair..your' hair will smell like onions ..

A week after my new job,at lunch a newfoundland lady asked me if I could cook authentic indian dishes. The moment I said yes she asked then how come you dont smell????
Thatz only becoz I take more trouble to put the fan running, cross ventilate, close all the cupboards and doors than cook. I shouldnt be blaming my co-worker for that bcoz most of times I have experienced the same from the customers who walk into our office.

I liked the idea of hanging wet towel. However I am allergic to artificial air freshners. To add some
-boil water for 20 mins(energy consumer I know!) but it takes out the smell as well as humidifies the surroundings.
-light an agarbatti (on weekends)
-Munch on some carrots/eat a mint after lunch
Finally,
Sniff on my clothes just before I leave. If found smelly, pop it into the dryer with fabric freshner for 10 mins.

Shriya
