Hello CD members

I am writing this for my friend. He asked my views/suggestions.
So thought of sharing with you.

Here is a situation:

Scene 1:
My friend’s background is Electrical engineer with more than 10 years of experience overseas. Landed in Toronto as PR. Found difficult to get job in own field. Worked in odd jobs like customer service & sales. After year or so some one suggested him to relocate in Alberta.

Scene 2 (Job A)
After landing in Alberta within 1-2 months got job in Electrical Company. Not as an engineer, but as Technologist/Technician. Salary is good. During interview a typical question like serious about making career in this company or planning to stay at least for 3-4 years. Since my friend was in need of Job, said yes etc.etc...
My friend was put in training for almost 8-10 months. No change in Salary etc. He is aware that growth is difficult in this company even if he stays for 4-5 years.

Scene 3 (Job B)
After coming to Alberta, he met professional people from his own field, come in contact with few more Electrical companies & contacts. Now he is getting job offer from one such company to work as an engineer. Salaries not much change. For him Salary is not criteria. He is even ready to take offer if Salary is less by 5-10%. For him most important is working as Engineer.

Now here are some concerns for him. Whether to continue in same job or take new offer.
So asked my views/ suggestion.

If you are supporting Job A, then reason why?
If you are supporting Job B, then reason why?

And last one, if you are saying go for Job B, then what should be the proper reason he should put in resignation letter while leaving Job A

Thanks

Hi m2611,

Well your friend should not take decision quickly. I would consider following before making decision.

1) I must get either good salary or I must get good knowledge which can be helpful later in my career.
2) If I am not getting both of them mentioned in point#1 than I would certainly look for alternative.

Now your friend should do following.

1) Talk to present employer and inform them that he has better offer in hand.
2) Ask current employer whether similar responsibilities may be available to him.

Based on response from current employer your friend should take decision. Now a days all companies must be flexible enough to be more responsive to market demands. If your friend was told that for three years he will not get an opportunity to shoulder more responsibilities doesn't mean he will not get it. If your friend may show that he is capable than why not.

By the way this is my opinion. All the best to your friend.

Ecom

Quite a valid input by ECom . Companies realize the possibility of attrition and might counter it with a better offer .

But really its a test of ethics if you have committed yourself for a particular time period and your employer has provided you training because of that .

I would talk with my employer , work with him for a reasonable time before making a switch . But I know its easier said than done.

On a 2nd thought however , I feel I would change if the new job provides me more satisfaction but only after explaining things to current employer and providing sufficient notice of time.

Companies know that people would change positions for personal or professional reasons.

My take...

Job A: If the employer is investing in 8-10 months of training, I would assume them to be genuinely interested in your friend and the job security with them will also be high. These may be a consideration in long term planning.

Job B: When you say Engineer, is it just a title or actual job responsibilities. Unfortunately I have come across quiet a few guys here whose title says something and they do something totally different. If it is indeed the career he wants, then may be he should seriously consider it. After doing some other job for 3-4 years (like in Job A), it is tough to get back to your original strengths.

How long is he in Job A now? I would say work with them for an year at least. If he can get a job in Company B now, he can surely get a similar job a few months later too. Give Job A a chance, once he/she establishes him/herself, talk to them about switching to what you really want to do. Any good employer will listen. If they can't for other reasons, they will understand one quitting the job. If they won't do it, then, what the heck, go for what you want.

Take Job B.
If Job A company cannot show him the respect and come through with promise of more pay and advancements and growth then too bad for Job A Company ... they should have taken care of your friend more.

when leaving to go to Job B ... your friend should just say
"Pursuing other opportunities" and leave it at that ...
don't say "You don't pay me enough"
don't say "You promised promotion but i got no promotion"
simply thank Job A for the opportunity and all the fun in the past 10 months and .... "good luck".

Well. I would take job B.
This is Canada where one is encouraged to move on. Canadian Desi's and immigrants are the only people who ask if they would be willing to work for 5-10 years in the company.
Try looking at it this way. What would happen if the company slows down. The employer would only be too happy to give the pink slip.
This is a case which happened in our office. A lady architect was recruited (desi) 3 years back and she worked very sincerely. She was given the pink slip a year later as the company slowed down. Once she got the pink slip, 2 senior people quarreled with the boss and resigned immediately. The employer was forced to call the laid off employee back. Once she came back, she was continuously looking for another job since the employer has once laid her off. She got a good one in 6 months and left. This time the boss was hopping mad. He refused to give her samples of drawings and a employment letter.
Most employers are like that. They only are nice when you are working for them.
It is time for your friend to concentrate on his career and not on pleasing his employer. What has he got to losse. His passport / certificates are not under the custody of the employer anyways.
Hope this helps.
TK A
