What is science of JOB FAIR ?

Every job fair i visited till date, looks like a drama. Every companies used to tell that, "Visit our website, check for posting and apply there"

To listen this, Yesterday, I spent $10 parking in jobfair by Humber's jobfair at st.clair & landsdown.

We all know about applying online and keep on doing!

Anybody got a job from jobfair? - For your info, I am job and E.I less since last 5 months even after 13 months of QA study in Humber college and getting ASQ's certification.

There is a certain amount of financial investment that is inevitable in a job search. Parking, incidentals (coffee..etc) .. a good quality(not cheap) interview suit and shoes.

The science behind job fairs is this:

1) know ahead of time what companies will be at the job fair and create a resume and cover letter ADDRESSED to that company (you can select the companies you are interested in..or apply to all..but not all companies will have jobs in your field). Check the companies websites prior to the job fair to see if they are hiring in QA (ie. ur particularl field).

2) Treat it like a networking event. Know your 'audience'. The purpose of being at a job fair as a job seeker is still to sell yourself. Read up on some of the companies (again..most job fairs advertise ahead of time what companies will be there).. at the job fair you can go upto a company, introduce yourself and say that you are looking for a ___ position (NEVER say "i'll take anything";). Take a professional looking note book with you and jot notes while or after speaking to the person. Ask them questions about the company and their future goals. Ask them what qualities they are looking for in a prospective candidate. Etc. You can get lists of questions off the net. I'll see if i can find some and post later.

3) Give them your resume and ask if you can contact them in a week to follow up on your application. If they say 'go online and apply" tell them that is fine..and ask if you can address your cover lette rto a specific individual in HR/hiring/manager etc. Ask questions like the turnaround time for hearing back. Ask if there is any way to follow up on your application.

A job fair may or may not be the key to getting a job but it is a very invaluable place to 'chit chat' with prospective employers. Most of the time if you JUST go and apply online .. you dont get to talk to or ask questions of a live human being. Usually there is no way to speak to anyone.

Sometimes.. you can impress the right person at a job fair and they may give you their business card and say 'send me your resume". That is a very good sign.

I do not completly agree with morning rain based on my experience.

The only thing i have benifited till date from these fairs is free gifts and lost is time and parking.

Morning rain says talk to them.......most of the companies do not send senior people or HR people, they are just junior level employees with not much knowledge abt hiring strategies and abt co. Besided there is so much rush around, it is hard to enter into any kind of serious conversation.

Now on, I just see all cos listed that are coming to job fair and apply to them online. They even have their web sites linked in the job fair listing so its easy.
