Hi. Just reading this thread and thought I might share my experience with you. We moved to Toronto from India end of Oct 2003 and hence I went through these some problems of where to live for the first few days, etc.
There are two types of accomodation you can look for on a temporary basis - furnished accomodation (bachelor, 1 bed, 2 bed, etc. available). The advantage with a furnished short term apartments is that you can cook your own food as they provide all the utensils, a bed, refrigerator, cooking range, etc. All you need to do is to buy the vegetables and provisions from a nearby supermarket. However, please bear in mind this is a bit expensive option. You're looking to pay around $500 a week.
The other option is to take up a normal hotel room and order food from outside restaurants.
What we did was for 1 week we took up a short term furnished accomodation - in our case we chose to go for a short term furnished apartment because our daughter was just a 1 1/2 years old and we didn't want to upset her food routine, etc. by ordering from outside. Within the week, we found an apartment for rent and moved in.
Best of luck

As Nishit Shah was asking updates from me, I got a good job now and am happy with the salary...this is the stepping stone and I hope good things will come to all new immigrants after initial 4-5 months...

Hi! Friends,
At the onset let me thank canadiandes.ca from the core of my heart - over telephone, after I got the lead from canadiandesi, I've finalised a p.g accomodation from India itself.
Contrary to my belief, immigration authorities were very co-operative. Though there was a big Queue in the Pearson Airport, immigration, customs clearance were absolutely hassle-free.
After I landed here, I observed that even the odd-jobs are very scarce now (at least that is what I'm told).
But thanx a lot to Biomed - He cared enough to give me a call to give the job leads & ph no. of placement agencies.
My settlement process till now was smooth-
- application of the P.R card automatically with the landing papers -( new immigrants need not to pay $50 for applying, it's included in the Right of Landing Fee)
- application for S.I.N card was done in the Brampton HRDC
- bank a/c opened the next day
-credit card application done - card exp within 7 wkg days.
- only OHIP Card applcation was not accepted, without P.R card or bank statement.
