Back in my place, pure white outfit on men is considered prestigious be it is on any occasion where in the case of women it is never preferred. It is common for widow to wear pure white (again on women only), such custom is fading though.

Dude are you Sikh? And what's the meaning of "Sikh" for you? I know it would sound strange but in 1984 after Indira Gandhi's assasination one Gurudwara in South Delhi's Gobindpuri was protected by Sindhis and in fact the Gurudwara is called Sindhi Gurudwara while the other Gurudwara was burned down by mob. Sindhi's said they were not Sikhs hence their Gurudwara should be spared. For general public anybody who goes to Gurudwara is a Sikh. May be this is your definition of being a Sikh.

True...seems to be a bit of a double standard.

Madam how many Sikhs you know of? It is very easy to judge people but you should not generalize.

Dude, we're talking about men and women here...not Sikhs only...please re-read the thread.

You will see a lot of families who have both Sikh and non-Sikh sons and they all go to Gurudwara. Also there are families who are non-Sikhs and they all go to Gurudwara.
As far as wearing white/Black for weddings goes, it is common in all north Indian cultures(not sure of South) to avoid these colors. However, it is mainly taken care of by the family who has to sit for the pooja and guests are free to wear these colors. So IMO if you have some dress which is white or black but has some embroidery/dupatta/stroll in different color..you are good to go`!
I like to go for vibrant colours for a wedding...its more feminine.

I can see that there might be confusion about this...I'm married to a Punjabi but he nor his family go to Gurudwara.

Anyway, thanks HelloG and Jonav and MR for your comments.

Methinks this thread has taken a somewhat strange tangent judging from others' posts...

Wearing white at a Sikh

wedding...?
Hi,

I am just throwing this one out for general discussion as I don't know what is appropriate myself.

I am going to a Sikh wedding in a couple of weeks in a Gurudwara and I wanted to wear a nice white shalwar kameez I have BUT I am not sure what the traditional custom is...is it appropriate to wear white at a Sikh wedding? I know in some Hindu circles we don't wear white at weddings (or rather it is frowned upon) and I don't want to offend anyone. The suit has some nice blue embroidery on it but again...still not sure if it's appropriate...is it?

Thanks for any advice.

Cyberian,

I think she asked nothing wrong. She knows the Hindu tradition and knows white is frowned upon on weddings, she just asked for a sikh tradition and whether it'll be a offence or not. In fact I like it, she inquired before proceeding on her own. JRF also said nothing wrong, he said white is prestigious in men and on women its frowned upon..no one mentioned anything else than that.

Why are you twisting the thread and bend on saying the things which no one said here. Please re read and think positively.

Jona
