Removing unnecessary software would help.
Also, you only need one version of the Java client.If this doesn't help, well go ahead and re-install the OS. If you have only one partition in your hard drive then you will loose everything after u re-install XP. You can take a backup in your other computer/desktop or external hard drive before you re-install XP.

RAM would be plug and play not affecting anything else.

Check you wireless internet speed. Normally this slows down. Also check you wireless is secured. If not, your neighbour must be leaching you internet connection.

in case you decided to do OS reinstall (which i really recommend) and have never done this before, don't forget to take a backup of all your documents (you cant backup your installed programs) and when you are ready to do re-install you can use this website http://www.windowsreinstall.com/ (scroll down to select OS)
