Hi CD's

We were coming to Toronto for vacation and will be staying in downtown. On our last visit I shopped at Dufferin mall and looked at Eaton center (highly over priced). Are there any other malls in close proximity of downtown? I've two small kids and hubby will be busy in business so distance of the mall matters to me (I'll be alone with them).

Any information is welcome.

Thanks.............Jona

Try Dixie mall where the price tag is often reasonable, while it is not in downtown but about 15 minutes from Downtown. Also try to visit China town where (Spadina/Dundas area) I happen to see lots of cheaper (cheapest I would say) clothing, the quality of such clothes may not be lasting but it is good if you would just use couple of times.

I didn't like the street at all, the clothes were shabby and very expensive ($40 for a kurti). I only liked the south Indian restaurant there, it was in basement...forgot the name though.

JRf, thanks for the info. I searched it on the net and it is nearby where we stay. I'm happy that it’s a flat mall, I'm afraid of malls with escalators especially with my twins.

Jona,
If Dixie mall is close to where you will stay, then you are not in Downtown but in the west end of the city. I know that buses go there but I am not sure if TTC (Toronto bus) goes there. You have have to take 2 buses and pay 2 fares.
I suspect that you will be living in a hotel that is on Queensway (and which you can see from the QEW - Around QEW/427 intersection).
Dixie mall is an outlet mall meaning that you get discounted stuff. Though you have some brand names, you also have sub standard stuff in that. There is a Sears outlet mall in the Dixie mall which is strewn with cloths thrown by people searching for cloths and carries some old style cloths but for a fair price.
Near where you stay is the Sherway Gardens (the restaurants alone are in the first floor and you do have a lift to go up). This mall is mid range to slightly high end stuff. It might be walkable distance to where you stay.
Just a stone's throwaway from the Sherway gardens, you have a small strip mall which has Walmart, Payless shoe store, old navy, Red lobster dining etc..

Along the subway line, you get Yorkdale Mall (high end-Yorkdale Subway station) and Scarborough town centre (Mid end).
You also have the famous IKEA near there (Etobicoke). If you go before 11:00 am everyday, they offer a $1 breakfast which is 2 scrambled eggs, a crossoint, french fries and 2 small pork sausages. I belive coffee (unlmited) is $1 as well as unlimited pop for $1. you do have free shuttle bus from Kipling subway station or you can walk there. The restaurant is in the 2 nd floor (above ground) but you do have lift access. BTW, IKEA is a furniture + home / office needs store.
Hope you are aware that it is peak summer here and that you will need to put / bring lots of sunscreen and hats/shades for yourself and the twin.

Hope this helps.

Peace
