Let me share an experience I had when we were on holiday early this year.
The hotel we stayed in had a bell boy (a young east indian), who stood out at the entry door.
When we were having the breakfast around 7:00 am we saw him standing out with his arms folded infront of him. The hot sun was already out although at that time he was in the shade. I asked one of the waiter what was that guys job, they told me that he would help with the luggage for new customers coming in..but then I asked him why wasn't he given a stool to sit on. He replied that bell boys are supposed to stand....ok all good.
When we came for lunch this guy was still standing at the same spot....and he was at the same spot at 6:00 in the evening...that was more than 11 hours. When the boss walked in, this bell boy had to salute him but the idiot boss could not even return a smile to this boy. (the boss just pretended that he does not even care and even know him)
Just imagine standing all this time....he may have had a break but i do not know...But I was feeling uncomfortable this was slavery big time...so I went and asked him how can he stand for so long and are they paying him overtime or so..He replied no overtime his wage was $250 per month with food and accommodation provided. He has to work 6 days a week. I told him this was not good but he kept on addressing me sir sir...what to do I am supporting a family in India.
Can you imagine that he has been told to stand and no slacking...he could be fired. There is a big queue for this type of job already in India. People willing to come and work in Dubai for this meagre pay.
I thought slavery was abolished a long time but no....not in Dubai, it is still thriving there.

Yes, absolutly Right!Once I asked the Manager of a Company (who was known to me) that how come your employees work for more than 8 hrs.He said:SLAVES R HAPPY DOING OVERTIME!The was really taken aback knowing the mentality of employers.

For the information of those who don't know that the employers keep the passports of employees with them. This applies to all low paid employees.
And mostly these employees r on company's visas so they r bound to contracts with the company.Even if the employee is getting a double/triple salary job with some other company he can't join coz the present employer has POWERS to a BAN on his entry to the country for 6 months.

Do you think Canada would allow these slaves to come in ..... coz they are down trodden and non english conversant ???

At least Middle East provides them that opportunity and double the money they would get in their home countries for the same amount of effort . Its a question of demand and supply more than anything else . With rising wage trend in India the queue for such aspirants would go down .... but as of now it does not appear to.

All the developed countries are aware of all this discrimination but they don't put sanctions on these countries. In fact the goras are very happy to have a Gulf assignment because they can get First world country salaries but there expenses are like third world countries because of cheap labour.

I don't think our south asian labour is doubling their money in Dubai. They are hardly saving anything. Most of them have paid heavy amounts to "buy" a visa and work for Dubai.

I know a Bangladeshi teaboy who would get rid of his *loan* for coming to Dubai in the next 4 years. Only after that he would start *saving* some money. And he is not alone, there are many more like him out there.

The recent inflation in Dubai has just worsened the situation!

Our people get fooled so easily by looking at the conversion factor and ignore the living costs while making a decision to work in the ME.

Let me talk about ME in general.
Labourers :
I had worked in Saudi Arabia before and most of the labourers there (from India) were muslims and were really happy to be there because they could do Umrah/ Haj. The average salary for an Indian labourer was 800 Riyals with accomodation in 2000. (Philipino- Riyal 1000, Nepali/Bangladeshi-Riyal 600). They spent atleast Sr 200 on food and hence saved Sr. 600 a month (Rs. 6500). However, they had paid Rs. 30000 to the aggent and hence most of their savings went to pay principal and interest. They would have been able to save only after 4 years but some of them liked it (non-mislims) since anyway they would have been unable to get any job in India at that time and most of them were from Ramanathapuram (tamil nadu)where the crops regularly failed. By end of 2000, nepalis and bangladesi's flooded the area and they were very happy to get SR. 600 a month since it was riots / floods /political uncertainity at home and most of them sold their lands and landed in Saudi Arabia. Most of them were very weak and generally unable to do heavy work. In the company that I had worked, the labourers told me that they relied on Overtime for savings. It also depends on the employer. if the employer is a factory or a MNC, then the labourers are wel treated, paid well and have overtime and free food / free food during overtime.
I talked to my friend in Qatar and he told me that the pay was still the same for labourers and he told me that Indians are not generally being recruited for labour work these days as Nepali's and Banagaladeshi's are preferred. Also with the Indian boom, it would not make sense for anyone to come to the ME for such a low salary.
Professionals / Technical people :
On the other hand, with the increase in Oil price, the ME is being a very hot destination for professionals and technical people from all over the world (Indian included). Even with the rise in inflation, salaries are attarctive. Once again, it depends on the company. If you get into a good company / MNC, you will get a good savings potential. If you get into a no name company, chances are that your status would be generally lower than what it was in India.

Dubai is seeing tremenodus growth these days. Friends tell me that when compared to Dubai, the savings potential (for professionals) is much better in Kuwait and Bahrain. Qatar is similar to Dubai in the sense that housing is becoming scarce and is almost equal to your monthly salary. So in Qatar, you should always negotiate your package with company housing .

Some one from Dubai must enlighten us if labaourers save well in Dubai / UAE (Generally speaking).

Hope this helps

Peace
