A thread on the subject of my interest and I hope the same with many others. Let us sheer from serious subjects. Just write down a little about the best hollywood movies you enjoyed including the uniqueness of the movie and what you enjoyed about the protagonist. Even if it is an antagonist, it is fine or something in between.

Need not to be from the series genre alone, could be any where from Drama, thriller and comedy etc.,.

Some of the movies I enjoyed.

God Father - The whole movie, Amazing role from Marlen.
About Schmidt - Ofcourse Jack rocked..,Did not act at all, just lived like that... Theme and the script was too good for me.
Sideways - Light script, subtle experessions of frustrated life from Paul.
Babel - Didn't feel like a movie.
American Beauty - Subtle portrayal of life style, plus Kevin's casual acting.
Wall street - Mr. Gecko's language and style is the only thing attracted me.
Life is Beatiful - I don't need to write about it.

Phone booth - Intelligence of the script, voice of Sutherland was the main attraction.
Saving Private Ryan - Everything about it.
Crimson Tide - Kept me glued to couch till the end.

Scent of a women - Al's acting was spectacular.

Heat - Sentiments, Nero's style and the Bank Robbery scene.

Departed - Pace of the movie.
Reservoir Dogs - Tarantino, a salute for your style.
Good fellas - Ditto.
Training Day - Its the pace.

Ben Hur - Set plus Charlton's expression of his affection to his family (emotional), not to forget the race. My pick in the movie was Charlton's adopted father's role and the sea battle.
Lawrence of Arabia - Set.
Brave Heart - I was chilled and shaken when I watched this (15 years back I hope).., I felt the wilderness of Scotland in the theatre.

Austin Powers - Subtle observations from Mike, very funny from my perspective.
Friday - Script, script..,
40 year old Virgin - Script and then again Seth rogen is the one who was too good though a small role.
Superbad - Very funny, Felt like a school kid for a moment.
Office Space - Being a Software person, I enjoyed it. They need to release more considering the updated software releases in teh industry.

Texas Chain Massacre - Gruesome.
Saw series - Gruesome.

As I see response, I will try to update my original post with the movies so that we enjoy the good movies you've seen.

List of movies I've planned to watch:
Citizen Kane - Orson Welles
China Town - Jack Nicholson.
Deliverance - Burt Reynolds, John Voight.
Gone With the Wind
Dial M for Murder
What Women Want
The Shawshank Redemption
Double Indemnity
The Apartment
The bridge on the river Kwai
12 angry men
Miss Daisy

three more oldies for you

Citizen Kane: voted as 100 best films of all time in 1997 and 2007. Directed by Orson Welles. A revolution in film making at that time, first feature film by Welles. Really nice direction that maintains suspense till the very end.

China Town: film noir genre. Starring Jack Nicholson and one of his great if understated performances..

Deliverance: Gritty thriller one is not going to forget. Its realism and situational impact is chilling. Starring Burt Reynolds and John Voight (Angelina jolies dad).
Watch this one and you may never take a canoe trip in redneck country. brrrr!

Gone With the Wind - brilliant portrayal of those times. Captures the heart and essence of the pre-war South.
Perhaps one of the few films that are as good as the book it's based on.
Both Clark Gable and Vivian were perfect in their portrayal of the respective characters.

Ben Hur - Great story line, fast paced. Never tired of watching it. Have seen it scores of times.

Terminator II - one of the best action movies ever. non stop, gripping suspense and action

Dial M for Murder - Hitchcock at his best. non stop suspense and surprise after surprise

What Women Want - nice, light hearted comedy, good for any occasion

The Shawshank Redemption - great performance by all characters.
Morgan's narrating is great.

I'm sure I'll think of more. Will update post later.

Girly classics - Dirty Dancing and Grease!

Pulp Fiction...the movie that revived John Travolta's career!

More recently...Crash, Blood Diamond and I thought the visuals were great in 300

Schindler's list, Scarface and A few good men are some of my favorites, apart from what has been already mentioned here.

Loves Al's style in Scarface.

Jack Nicholson was at his best in A Few Good Men (specially in the court room scene). KK Menon tried hard to copy him in a recent bollywood movie (Can't recall the name, the one with Rahul Bose in it) but failed pathetically.

1) Singing in the Rain - A heart warming musical. Great performances by Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor.

2) Sunset Blvd - A dark film Noir set in 40's Hollywood where money and glamor lured many aspirants to the industry.

3) Double Indemnity - A crime thriller and first film to portray murder/insurance fraud .

4) The Apartment - A funny film about a man who lets his apartment for trysts to his company executives.

5) Some like it hot - A comedy film triggered by the infamous "Valentines day massacre" in Chicago. Marilyn Monroe at her best.

6) Psycho - A timeless classic from Hitchcock. The shower scene would still send chills over your spine.

7) The Graduate - The first film to portray the concept of cougher relationship (old lady and young man). Amazing songs and great acting by Dustin Hoffman.

8) The bridge on the river Kwai - Story of an imprisoned army captain's courage, leadership, Team work and sacrifice. Must see for any management aspirant.

9) Annie Hall – A romantic comedy between a newyork comedian and a ditsy girl.

10) 12 angry men – The life of a convict at the hands of 12 jurors with conflicting interests. Great case study of a murder from different views.

Thanks for bringing up this thread . Amongst my recommended favs not mentioned above .

One flew over the cuckoo's nest - Jack Nicholson 1st Oscar ? : A man being put in an asylum and his journey out of it .

Casablanca .... Imgrid Bergman ... a classic mega hit love story any day ... play it again Sam .

Untouchables : Robert Di Niro , Kevin Costner & Sean Connery equalling each other in performance with Sean taking an edge and also the best actor Oscar.

Terms of endearment : a 3.5 hour mother daughter relnship spanning all phases. Shirley Mc Laine & Debra Winger ......... right from the time the child is born .... what he / she means to the parent and how the relationship grows . A pognant portrayal .

Vertigo & Rear Window : Hitchcock s better ones classically filmed . Have the same actor ... James Stewart .... Vertigo is better .

Beautiful Mind : Rusell Crowe..... substantial performer as a genius mathematician ....... facing mental problems .... reminded of Goodwill Hunting .

Towering Inferno ... one of the best thrillers seen ..... inaugral party on the 78 th floor and fire on the 70 th .... nowhere to go ... hard to imagine it was made in the 70 s .

An Officer and a Gentleman .... Tom Cruise at perhaps his boyish best ... and Debra Winger again ........ you can't leave this in the middle ....
