Recently a direct enegy salesman stopped by our door and got my wife to sign some document, claimed he was just doing a price check and asked for hydro bill.. My wife gave it to him..

She mentioned something about direct enegy guys coming to our house to me but i did not pay attention..

10 days later i get a call from direct enegy saying i signed up for fixed engery plan. I though it was my parents and siad they were not authorised to sign anythin.. The guy hung up claiming he will call another time..

Later on my wife confirmed that she had signed somehting.. and i called up direct energy customer support to cancel the contact..
I am hoping they actually cancelled it..

How do i prevent such things from happening.. i dont think i can control stupidity on my familys part.. is there something i can do on the side of embrige and my local hydro to prevent such switches..

What Direct energy offered and your signed will be a quote for a 5 yr contract. By law, that will need to be verbally confirmed by you in 80 (or was it 90?) days. They will keep calling you until then. Keep saying No, I don't want the contract, and they won't switch. Just don't say Yes for any questions. If you say No, they will hang up and most likely call up later again. Keep saying No and don't bother to pick up the call.

I am guessing you are a new home owner, is it? Don't worry, these are parts of learning to be a new home owner. I went thru similar things when I got my place!

Pls also check if the person is calling from Direct Energy or on behalf of DE ..??
It it is DE , just call them and get it cancelled .. The company ( centrica ) is too big to get involved in scams .
Pls advise everyone in house not to sign ANY doc's and not to produce any bills carrying your details to anyone . None of the companies ( Gas , hydro , water ) will ever come to your door to verify any info ..

Even if you call, you will have to most probably send a letter faxed to them. Get their fax number and fax a letter stating that you wish to cancel. It is a contract that your wife signed.

I think it is a bit late for the OP's case; but just for the sake of others I am posting some info here. This is for Ontario:

******************************************************

Scams - Door to Door Salesmen - Energy Choices
As an electricity or natural gas consumer, you have rights and responsibilities:
• Know who your supplier is, if you have a contract, with whom, the price you pay, and your monthly consumption.
• Ask agents for photo ID, what company they represent, and for a copy of any material presented you can keep.
• Know the price offered, exit conditions and renewal options. Read the fine print.
• Use the 10-day cooling off period after receiving the written contract to review the contract and research any questions you have. Make sure you're comfortable with your choice.
• In some cases, you'll need to reaffirm your contract for it to remain in effect. Typically, reaffirmation is done in writing or by phone.
• Don't feel rushed or pressured - make the choice that's right for you.
The energy choice is YOURS!
Under Ontario law, if you sign a contract in your home worth more than $50 you can cancel within 10 days by sending a letter to the company. You must be able to prove that the letter was received, so send it by registered mail, fax or courier.
If you wish to cancel a door-to-door contract, take a look at this sample and then call the Government of Ontario Consumer Helpline at 1-800-889-9768.

Having done some research into what my wife was scammed into signing..

Direct Energy is selling electrcity for 8.53 cents per kWh where as the unregulated rate is 5 cents for upto 600kWh.. and 5.5 above that..

Their gas prices are fixed at 36.5 against the unregulated price of 38.5
Mind u the unregulated price is just an estimate and as the gas prices have come down recently this may also get lowered..

I dont intend to stay in canada for more than 3-4 years.. so i would have ended up paying early exit fees .. which could be a lot

So this was the worst thing i could get into..
