I am trying to hook up a wireless connection for my two laptops. I bought a Linksys WRT54GL router. The computers are recognizing the routers, however, they do not connect to the internet.

In other words, it says, "signal excellent" and "connected to XXXX", but not able to open up a webpage. Under "status", it says, "no or limited connectivity.

Can someone help? Thanks.

I used a program called Netmagic to set up my network. Worked great. It keeps the network safe and has many options.

Try repair network and see if it is finding the IP address of your provider. If not then you may have to manually configure it.

Try rebooting your internet model and the router, if still issue exists, connect any laptop directly to your internet modem. If there is connectivity, try connecting the laptop to the router - not wireless, directly to the router- and router to the internet modem . If still issue exists, check the router config and ensure that the wireless is ON (This is default, so unless u changed something, it should be ON). None of these works, try resetting the router - there should be reset button/hole in the back or so. Press for 20 secs or so with a pin.

Btw, do u have Zone Alarm or any such firewall in ur laptop? This is a known issue with ZoneAlarm...

ok it's no big deal. first of all do you have cable connection or DSL. if it's cable just turn off everything and do the power up starting from cable modem. (modem>>router>>computer) but if it's DSL connection you need to enter your PPPoE settings in your router.

Hi !
If you have already tried everything and nothing is working out please call Linksys.
They will walk you through . Linksys is pretty good for technical support.
Hope it helps

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Here's more info.

I have a DSL from Primus. Here's what I did last night. I disconnected cables and power from the DSl modem and the computer. Then I cabled the DSL, powered up the DSL, cabled the computer and the router, cabled the router and DSL, powered up the router. The computer was on all along.

Then I went to 192.168.1.1 (Linksys's IP) to put in an admin password, personalized SSID and setup passphrase and hexadecimal Key for the WEP 128 bit security. Now, I had an unique SSID with security enabled network. Also, I put in the PPPoE username and password

Then I inserted the CD for my laptop adapter (since mine does not have internal wireless adapter) and installed the adapter.

My home laptop was then able to see the router profile. Just to verify, I booted up my work laptop and let it search for my home profile, which it did. I was able to double click the home profile and it asked me to enter the security key and I did. My work laptop also now was able to recognize the router with "excellent" level of signal.

Both the computers are able to see the internet if I

1)wire phone jack to modem to laptop (original connection before buying router) or
2)wire phone jack to modem to router to laptop.

However, with wires off between router and computers, both the home and work laptops cannot see the internet (although they can see the router). In other words, communication occurs from laptop to router, but apparantly, not from router to internet.

Reading few other forums, it seems to give me an impression that the router may not be able to read the ISP's IP. Some have suggested pinging to determine if that's the case.

I know this got long, but I hope the above would help to assist me with further suggestions. Thanks again.
