i have posted around 10 ordinary letters since i came here and it all took hardly 7 days to reach india. anyways i am going to wait till the end of the day and block the cheque.
You should wait. It can take more than 12 days.
Nobody can encash the check, if they open the new account today and check is dated earlier (unless bank employee is involved and open the backdated account, which is unlikely with computerization of banks).

I stumbled across this thread while looking for ICICI bank information. I took time to register here and write the following message.
I lost my money the same way. I sent a crossed cheque to Calcutta in a ordinary Canada post. It never reached the destination but cheque money was withdrawn from NRI bank of SBI!
It happened around 6 years back. I threatened SBI for falsifying and sent a number of lawyer's letter. Nothing happened. It added to my overall loss.
I happened to visit the NRI bank later and see the cheque myself. It has a neat duplicate signature of mine to make it a bearer cheque. The bank never bother to check the ID of the person concerned.
If you take my advice: CANCEL THE CHEQUE.
