dear CDs,
I am new to this amazing country, would like to understand from some of you the Pros and Cons of having a English name, I come from hong kong where most chinese guys have a popular english name which makes its easy to relate to them.
I am not sure how does it work in Canadian Work Culture, so first hand experiences or constructive suggestions are welcome ! I am quite positive to having an english name at this moment !
Thanks in advance !
i think it totally depends on your name. if it's really complicated then sure have a english name. but if it's not that hard to pronounce then you can stick to your name.
it's your presonal preference.

In regards to name change three people immgrated from abroad Sadruddin, Badruddin & Fakruddin, Sadruddin changed his name to Sud, Badruddin become Bud and Fukruddin went back.
Depends from person to person. I am quite sensitive about my name and how it is pronounced. I would never change my name to suit anybody else's tongue.
I have heard that having a "Western" name increases the chances of getting an interview. I do not know how far this is true.
I work for a company, where everybody (especially in top management) makes sure that your name is pronounced correctly - even tough Indian names
So it is a matter of personal choice
So far I haven't come across many Indians that have changed their names to be more western if you will. But I do have a few Indian friends who have shortened their first names just for the sake of simplicity.
While some might think that is absolutely despicable, it does make some sense. Ultimately, my opinion is that it doesn't make the world of a difference you think it will in terms of career etc...
But don't compare this with Chinese that change their names. It is a different ball game in terms of the language structure etc
Dear CDs,
My idea was to get a feel of how Indians have adapted in this country, so looks like it maybe good idea to have a nick name or short name for easy acceptance initially. But there is no need to change the name like chinese do in that part of the world.
Thanks

Changing your name to be less ethnic is very passe. No one does it anymore. It was done back in the 70's or so.
