Your idea of obtaining the Canadian Citizenship is FIRST and FOREMOST, regardless where you settle down in life is worthy of note.
Freddie.

Now only if clinging to my Indian passport had me as rich as Mittal... alas!

Investpro,
Do you see now why FFTL wants her to get the cdn. passport the foremost?

Peace by TK

When you see some one with a positive outlook in life and want to proceed in life with a great look at the future, I want them to succeed in life and move on from here, without brooding over the past. My feeling after reading such a letter, from a young lady, who lost a dear and near person through divorce and now here at at the cross roads in life, a new destination, looking for support and wanting to proceed further in life is, to encourage and provide moral support to her. I am sure you and many more like you will join and help her with your words of support too.
If you have spent a good three years in Canada, and have nothing to show for it, the only way the OP can go about it in a positive manner is with an application for the Canadian Citizenship and acquiring the same and a Passport in due course, with the hope to help the progeny to be born a Canadian in any land, if and when she finds a suitable mate and settles down in life, does not matter in which country.That I think is point to note, as a saving grace, she has found that and I also found it to be the same and worthy of note.
Besides the important symbolism behind acquiring citizenship, there are many viable benefits. Firstly, as a Canadian citizen you will have the right to apply for a Canadian passport. With a Canadian passport, you will be able to travel to many countries without needing a visa, except to India. Secondly, as a citizen you will have the right to vote in elections and be more involved in the political process. Lastly, whereas as a permanent resident, you have to remain in Canada for a certain amount of time and keep renewing your status. But once you become a Canadian citizen you can leave the country for an unlimited amount of time do not have to worry about renewing your status.
Once you are a CANADIAN, you are always a Canadian. Any kids born to you could be registered outside of Canada and can also become a Canadian in due course. You can Marry anyone and can sponsor and enter Canada with ease, by accompanying a Canadian Citizen. No need to punch the time clock, the door stays open for them.
If you ever return back and spend adequate time in the future years, one will qualify for most of the benefits at the time of retirement.
Best part is Health Care has been FREE and hope it does remain so. (With just the waiting period to comply with.)
If you are a qualified person, as a Liaison, the travel to any destination could be arranged in a matter of moments. The Citizenship and the Passport has a lot of premium attached to it and a few, who are using it, will vouch for it. You are an Ambassador of Good will.

Thanks for asking.

Freddie.

Just in the passing I came across this article on WSJ a few months back, which I saved, for all of the Desis to read and derive benefits out of it, if their Grand Mother or Grand Father happens to be a US Citizen. Even if ONE person derives it, I will feel happy about it and for posting it here.

During the processing of your application for Canadian citizenship, you should only contact CIC if you:
change your address;
plan on leaving Canada for more than two weeks in a row;
are charged with a criminal offence;
have not received any information on your file within the general processing times.

I can apply for my citizenship on February next year. I got a job offer from an university outside Canada and need to join by end of March. My wife and daughter will be here till they get their passport. I want to come for writing citizenship exam whenever they call me. My question is -

1. Do I need to inform CIC about my absence?

2. When they check my passport during exam, is staying outside Canada will cause a problem? Remind you, my family will be here and I have sufficient financial and residencial ties with Canada.

3. Can they refuse my citizenship?
