Hi CD,

One of my relative's son is in his final year B.Com., Degree (3 yrs degree) and he likes to pursue his post graduation here in Canada. He is financially much stable and academically average. I really like to help him continue his studies here

1. What courses could he pursue ? Does he need to take any Diploma course or MBA degree ?
2. How could he prepare for any such option ?

Appreciate your response...

Edited information:

Perhaps it is the discrepancy in my post where I have not explained it clearly, sorry about that.

He is just about 21 years old and does not have a PR, his only interest is to pursue further education in Canada and then settle, he is financially stable enough to support himself as an individual for at least another 7-8 years without any financial assistance. So his only goal is education and rewarding growth.

Opportunities for a B.Com grad in Canada are next to nil, unless he is interested in labour or secretarial positions, walmart etc. A B.Com degree in Canada is worthless. Pursuing an MBA will not necessarily add a lot of value in terms of securing employment as he has no experience in Canada but it might be a good start.

Given his education or lack thereof, it might be best to stay put in India.

I personally know a B.com who works as an IT Manager in one of the top IT compant in canada and earning 120K+ perks / bonus a year. He is an Immigrant from India.
A lot of people that I know in IT in Canada are Bsc, Msc, Bcom in a variety of fields like biology, Chemistry etc....
My recommendation :
May be he should pursue IT courses or Finance courses to become a charted accountant / accountant.

Hope this helps

Peace by TK

I am a B.Com graduate from Delhi University, and really won't say that opportunities are nil. I am working in the topmost and a reputed Canadian telecom firm in it's IT division alongside Engineering graduates.

All it needs is some professional course with B.Com. As TK mentioned, start with any call-centre while persuing a part-time tech./finance courses, and after some experience in the field start applying in good companies. Trust me, I have seen people even with BA from India working on a good positions. One of the IT Project Manager who's working with me is BA from South Africa (He's Indian).

On top of it, please add 'LUCK'....

I think there's great potential if he proceeds with his post-graduation. I work for directors in my IT company that don't even have an MBA degree. It may not be the panacea for all employment woes but for a B.COM graduate, it is a step in the rigt direction.

However, why do MBA here? Granted there are some good schools here but India has fantastic schools for MBA. Also, work experience might be a prerequisite.

Take small strides. If you are going to help him study here:
Start making a list of MBA schools.
Find out which are the best, good, average.
Find out there admission criteria
Find out what criteria the kid satisfies
Find out the course fees in each institution
Find out if the kid is willing to work part time

It depends on many factors that what courses he could pursue. First of all his desires to study and other is his strength and weaknesses.i.e. If he is very good in communication and English and possess a dynamic personality MBA is fit for him. If he is very good with computers then he can pursue IT and if he is very good with Numbers he can pursue Finance course and can become a CGA .

Other thing you mentioned financially stable and average academically then he can start with average job and then develop himself in business. This country has a good potential for small businesses too. Like he can work in Subway or gas station or pizza store and later on he can own it.
