here's my comment submitted to the star and is now online.

Follow the current rules
Even though it seems from ongoing polls that most Canadians are against the coalition govt staging a 'coup d'etat', if the constitution currently allows for such a scenario then those rules should be applied. If there is a huge populous cry against the move, it is only appropriate that the new government that comes into power put that to vote and change or amend the constitution if need be. At the moment what is currently written in the books should be followed, whether to allow a coalition government or to dissolve parliament or whatever the course as outlined already on paper. Not to follow those rules would set a precedent and lead to no rules being adhered to in the future. Then we will always have a free-for-all.

As far as I know, the GG has both options and she can decide based on her reading of the current situation. So even if the GG dissolves this parliament and calls for a new election, it is well within the rules - please correct me if I am mis-informed.

At other times I wouldnt have been so opposed to this coalition if the opposition atleast had a leader - currently they dont - the current leader is only an interim leader till a new one is chosen next may. Also, to form a coalition with the help of Bloc is like accepting thier demand and making them your partner.

We have already seen such coalitions dont work in India - the government stays in power, but there is effectively no work done since all the partners dictate thier own agendas.

At this stage if a fresh election is declared, I am sure both Liberals and NDP will lose further seats and make Harper's position stronger.

A sensible solution for all will be to make amends and Harper to take a more cooperative approach in a minority government.

I agree with that.
That is the most prudent and sensible move at this time.
Whatever the law or constitution says, it is just morally and politically wrong for the opposition parties to gang up at a time like this.
There are only two sensible options at this time - allow Harper govt. to continue and reject the opposition proposal OR call another general election.
If another election is called, I'm certain the conservatives will make further gains in the parliament or maybe even win an outright majority.
A lot of people are disgusted with what the opposition is doing.

I have edited your post by numbering a couple of points.

1.Coalition govt may not work well in India but they have worked well in Scandinavian countries. Personally if any comparisons will be done here by the 'mainstream' it will be with Scandinavia and not India nor Italy for that matter nor Spain.

2. Agree, it is sensible- but since when is political chicanery and connivance sensible.I don't think the 3 parties ready to form a coalition will eat humble pie at this late date by making amends. Maybe I am wrong though.

The other thing they are talking about is proroguing which effectively means that the bill that has caused so much furor will be wiped clean and they will come back in Jan with another bill

Media release from ruby dhalla

_______________________________________________

I hope this letter finds you well. Since Parliament started last week there has been no shortage of activity and excitement. I have received emails and phone calls from many of you in regards to the situation that has transpired over the last 96 hours.

We are living in historical and unprecedented times. In the recent election the PM was elected to provide leadership and vision during this time of economic uncertainty. Unfortunately he failed to gain the support and trust of Canadians and Parliament when he presented his Economic Fiscal update. While most countries have provided economic stimulus to acknowledge their automotive and manufacturing workers, and provide sustainability to Canadian families as well as seniors, Mr. Harper has chosen to take no action and show no leadership. Stephen Harper’s economic update had no initiatives to create jobs or protect savings. To say that Stephen Harper and Jim Flaherty miscalculated is an understatement. Canadians need to show leadership and demonstrate statesmanship and Stephen Harper has failed to do either.

That is why the opposition parties have decided to work together on behalf of the people of Canada and form a Liberal-led coalition.

The Coalition Government that has been proposed will be a Liberal led government with the NDP. The Bloc has agreed to (until the date of June 30, 2010) see beyond partisan politics and support this Liberal Coalition government in order to accommodate the economic tumultuous time ahead. The Bloc will not be a part of the Coalition; they have only agreed to support the Coalition. In addition Mr. Dion would be Prime Minister until May when the new Leader of the Liberal Party would take over as the Prime Minister of Canada. The main purpose behind this initiative is to provide stability, strength and a focused economic plan during this time of global economic crisis.

The situation at the moment is extremely fluid and changing rapidly.

Stephen Harper has a few options, moving forward. Harper has already delayed the confidence vote that was scheduled to take place on Monday December 1, 2008 to December 8, 2008. It is unfortunate Mr. Harper is afraid to face the fact that he has lost the trust of Canadians. Harper needed to take action and provide leadership and has done nothing.

Stephen Harper’s upcoming appointment with the Governor General will determine the outcome of last week’s Parliament events. One of the options of the Governor General is to grant the request made by all of the leaders of the opposition parties for a Liberal led coalition majority government.

A collapsing of Stephen Harper’s Conservatives will be a manifestation of his failures in recognising the desire of Canadians to have stability and support during this challenging global economic crisis. During this economic crisis, Stephen Harper is working harder to protect his own job than he ever did to protect the jobs of the hard working Canadians in Brampton Springdale.

The situation is changing quickly. This is about the people of Canada who deserve a Government that has an action plan and can provide the leadership and stability during this time of economic uncertainty. I will be on CBC Don Newmans Politics Show between 5-530 pm today to discuss further.

I will keep you posted my friends as the situation develops. An exciting time, incredible journey, and historic moment for our nation.

So what - she is Liberal MP.
What else can you expect?

Her note is the most asinine commentary I have seen so far.
