We landed few months back in Canada.I guess we have overcome teething period.CD has been very helpful in the process of settling down.So far it has been a good experience.....
Few mistakes that we made as we were unaware.....I would like to share for the benefit of new immigrants and it will be good idea if other CD's can also put together some TIPS.Small little things also matter when you are new.
1.Do Not sign any long term contract with mobile,home-phone,internet companies.Go for 'pay as u go' system. With time you will know which company and what package suits you the best!(Our 1st phone bill was $300 )
2.To get an apartment you need to take rental insurance.(I don't know all apartments need that or not).Banks like TD will take all the info and say they will mail a form which you have to fill up and mail back to them. The process takes about 7days.If you need insurance same day...RBC gives that.
TIP:You get discounted insurance quotes on Home/Auto/Life if you keep same company for all of these.
3.When you sign up for phone/internet etc make sure to check all the policies of the company. For example, you get 1st 3 months free internet from Bell.Subscribe for highest speed as its free BUT if u think ur usage is not much and would like to go for lower package let them know b4 end of 3 months otherwise u r charged Fees for downgrading ur package.
4.If you have checking account in bank, u r eligible for free safety deposit(locker)...(as least TD gives)....but availability is a problem.Even if you have to pay initially you get priorty in waiting list.
Most importantly be DEAF EARS to people who give you negative feedback about Canada.Since you have put lot of time, money and efforts to come here.....don't get disheartned listening to negative comments.Be positive and work hard initially...it will pay off later!

Fido.
Hi Folks,
Hope everyone is having good time here after all we came so far to have better time and life.
About me: I came as an international student after completion of my Btech in Computer Science with no experience in IT and i did Post grad in wireless Networking (1 year). I really worked hard to find a stable job here so would like to share some tips with my friends who are looking for job ( entry level, intermediate):
It hardly matters if u have working experience but u have to show it on ur resume. put in such a way that ur employer gets an idea that u are reliable source.
Example: put some projects who cares if u really did it or not ( search on google)
put ur certifications like CCNA ( along with u really good at like iput i am good in switching and routing) .
put ur GPA and ur previous education major subjects
Now, important point: I was having 0 experience but still i mentioned on top of my RESUME:
SOLID, 5 YEAR TECHNICAL AND IT EXPERIENCE THAT INCLUDES MY PREVIOUX EDUCATION, PROJECTS, PG DIPLOMA, INTERNSHIP(that i did back home) ....so u see i was able to convience to my employer that i had 5 year of experience and when they asked HOW?
My answer: i did 4 year bachelors in Computer science working on various projects, programming languages, LAb works that gives me hands on experience.
and later i did 1 year PG diploma in wireless technology that was all lab based and i gained valuable hands on experience working on real projects .
Also, i told them that while working in class on group projects i learnt how to be a team memeber and work independently...so u know that all ur employer want to hear.
Convience them that if u can study this much and did so many labs at college/university u really have experience. Tell them u have ability to do any kind of work and u have knowledge of technology. tell them that technology changes daily and u have ability to research and discuss with peers to provide solution to every problems.
honestly, in my interview i made my employer happy , he hired me and did my PR aswell later ... cause he said it doesnt matter if u have XPerience or not , what matters is that u have ability to do research and share with team members....
Thanks
Harsh
Fido is better than Rogers;
Fido offers fido dollers at the end of ur montly statement based on ur usage so u can later use them to buy a phone or bluetooth or someother phone accesories.
Fido has better and cheap plans and even offers cheap evenings and weekend packages than Rogers.
Fido customer service really listen to u won't ignore u unless u dnt speak rude to them .I requested them to change my cell twice in two years after my warranty ended and they sent me twice witut any costs, didn't even asked for my old cell.
Now i have rogers,
My cell got broken , rogers sent me new as it was under warranty and asked me to send the old back and i forget to send it back and they charged me $200 , when i called them they never agreed .
Their evening package is expensive.
They never listen to u unless u really speak nicely with them.... sometimes u dnt feel liketalking nicely ...lollllzlz
